Walmart is selling $30 Strawberry Shortcake sneakers in adult women’s sizes online and in some stores. Strawberry Shortcake turns 50 in 2028, and grown-up fans are a big reason she’s still everywhere, even on sneakers.
Strawberry Shortcake sneakers are available at Walmart for $30.
The white sneakers feature Strawberry Shortcake on the sides, along with red and pink trim, and a rubber strawberry on the laces.
Sizes 6-11 are available.
I want these and have added them to my Christmas list!
Where did Strawberry Shortcake come from?
A greeting card. Artist Muriel Fahrion created the character in 1977 while working at American Greetings. Strawberry Shortcake first appeared on a series of cards around 1979 and 1980.
Kenner turned her into a doll in 1979. Each doll’s hair was scented to match its character, so Strawberry smelled like strawberries, Blueberry Muffin smelled like blueberries, and so on.
Animated TV specials followed every year from 1980 to 1985.
Since then, the brand has been rebooted several times, in 2003, 2009, 2018 and 2021. WildBrain, then known as DHX Media, took full control of Strawberry Shortcake in 2017 as part of a $345 million deal that also included a majority stake in Peanuts.
Why do adults still love Strawberry Shortcake?
Mostly nostalgia. The girls who had the original dolls are now adults with their own money to spend, and Strawberry Shortcake reminds a lot of them of being a kid.
“Fans love Strawberry Shortcake because of the warm memories of childhood the brand evokes,” said Ben Peace, WildBrain’s executive vice president of franchise.
The scented dolls may help, too. Smell is strongly tied to memory, and these dolls smelled like dessert. Perfumes and candles have been available over the years, made to smell like the original dolls.
The look also holds up. Strawberry Shortcake’s world is made of pinks, reds, gingham, hearts, bonnets, and strawberries, and those sweet, girly details fit right in with the soft, cute styles that keep popping up in fashion and on social media.
She’s an icon!
What’s next for Strawberry Shortcake?
A new show for kids and a big birthday. WildBrain’s new CG-animated series, Strawberry Shortcake’s Bake Shop, premieres Oct. 16 on the franchise’s YouTube channel, with 26 three-minute episodes.
The show features updated versions of classic characters like Orange Blossom, Blueberry Muffin, Huckleberry Pie, Raspberry Tart, Apple Dumplin’ and Custard.
Her 50th anniversary is in 2028, and I expect a lot of great merchandise to be released!
