Marvel Studios has dated its X-Men reboot and named its villain.
The film opens May 5, 2028, with Adam Driver playing Mister Sinister.
Kevin Feige made the announcement at D23 on Aug. 14, and told the audience the movie will be “Jean Grey’s story.”
The full X-Men cast Marvel announced
Six mutants and one villain, with more expected.
Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, having already debuted the character in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Kit Connor is Cyclops. Christopher Abbott plays Professor X.
Samara Weaving is Emma Frost. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue. Maya Boyd, who appeared in Broadway’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” is Storm.
Feige said this is not the complete cast. Wolverine has not been announced.
Most of the actors had met one another backstage shortly before walking on stage together.
How Adam Driver revealed his X-Men role
He did it by video, and he did it as a bit.
Driver said he was “very excited” to be playing Magneto, paused, then corrected himself: “even better, Nathaniel Milbury.”
Milbury is one of the aliases Mister Sinister uses in Marvel comics. His proper name is Nathaniel Essex.
On joining Marvel at all, Driver said he and Feige had been in conversation for years. “Now I feel like we’ve found the perfect film, at the perfect time, with characters I care deeply about.”
Driver had turned down multiple MCU roles previously.
Why Mister Sinister and Jean Grey go together
Feige’s “Jean Grey’s story” line and the villain choice are not separate decisions.
In the comics, Mister Sinister is a geneticist fixated specifically on Cyclops and Jean Grey. He believes their combined DNA can produce the ultimate mutant, and that obsession drives decades of storylines.
Casting Sink and Connor as that pair, then adding Sinister as the antagonist, sets up the exact relationship the comics built around them.
Sinister is also, as one outlet put it, a sneering Victorian mad scientist who broods about stealing the X-Men’s genes.
Who is making the X-Men movie
Jake Schreier directs, coming off Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,”* later retitled “The New Avengers.”
Lee Sung Jin, creator of “Beef,” and Joanna Calo are writing. Schreier directed several episodes of “Beef.”
The film also reunites Driver and Abbott, who both starred in HBO’s “Girls.”
When X-Men fits into the MCU timeline
The placement matters more than usual here.
“Avengers: Secret Wars” arrives in December 2027, and Feige has described it as a reboot for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. X-Men lands roughly five months later.
That makes it the first film of Phase 7.
“Avengers: Doomsday” comes first, on Dec. 18, 2026.
What Marvel has not announced
The list of unknowns is long for a film with a date attached.
There is no official title. The film is still labeled Marvel Studios’ untitled X-Men movie.
No trailer exists. No synopsis has been released. No filming start date has been announced, though a 2028 release suggests production begins late this year or sometime in 2027.
Plot details remain sealed.
What else Marvel has coming in 2028
X-Men is one of three Marvel films that year.
“Black Panther 3” is dated Dec. 15, 2028. A Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling is confirmed for 2028 without a specific date.
Gosling is having a year. He also leads “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which opens May 28, 2027.
Before any of that, “VisionQuest” premieres on Disney+ on Oct. 14, closing the “WandaVision” trilogy.
