A new construction permit for the area around Adventureland’s popcorn cart doesn’t expire until Aug. 31, 2028. Most permits last about a year, and nobody knows yet what the work is.
Something is going on in Adventureland, and it’s going to take a while.
A new construction permit for Adventureland at Magic Kingdom doesn’t expire until Aug. 31, 2028, WDWMAGIC reported Monday. Most Disney World permits run about 12 months. This one runs nearly two years.
The contractor is MLC Theming, a longtime Disney vendor, and the scope of work is listed only as “general construction.”
Where is the Adventureland construction permit?
The permit is tied to the Adventureland Popcorn Cart, the stand between The Magic Carpets of Aladdin and Jungle Cruise, per WDWMAGIC.
That doesn’t mean the popcorn cart is the project. Permits get tied to a nearby address, and WDWMAGIC says the work could just as easily cover the area around it. That stretch of Adventureland is one of the most crowded walkways in Magic Kingdom, packed with strollers and people heading to Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise.
Is Disney building something new in Adventureland?
Probably not a whole new ride, at least based on this permit.
WDWMAGIC reports that the permit was filed under Walt Disney Imagineering’s Facilities Asset Management group. Permits filed there usually cover maintenance and refurbishment, not brand-new attractions. New additions usually show up under Imagineering’s show-related permits instead.
So the most likely answer is a long, slow refresh of that part of the land, like new theming, walkways or infrastructure. But the unusual length is what makes people wonder.
WDWMAGIC summed it up. There’s “no way to confirm exactly what’s planned” yet.
Why would a Disney permit last two years?
A few possible reasons:
The work happens in phases, a little at a time, so the area can stay open during park hours
It’s a bigger project than a quick repair, like redoing pathways or building facades
Disney is being cautious with the dates so it doesn’t have to refile if work runs long
Magic Kingdom already has a lot of construction going on. Big projects are underway on the back side of the park, including the new Cars coaster at Piston Peak. Spreading smaller work out over two years could keep Adventureland from looking like one big construction wall.
What else is changing in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom?
This isn’t the first permit here lately:
Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room had a permit filed earlier this month. Disney Food Blog reported it covers labor, materials and electrical work by Buena Vista Construction, and our Sept. 19 story found it’s maintenance, not a show change.
Aloha Isle, home of the Dole Whip, had an Imagineering permit filed back in April.
The Adventureland marquee sign got a refurbishment in September 2025.
None of these are big announcements on their own. Put together, it looks like Disney is giving Adventureland a steady tune-up.
What does MLC Theming do at Disney World?
MLC Theming works on themed areas all over Disney parks. It handles the details that make a land feel real, like rockwork, facades and props. Earlier this year it was listed on permits for Keel Boat Landing and the Haunted Mansion area, according to WDWMAGIC’s permit tracker.
When MLC shows up on a permit, it usually means theming work, not new ride systems.
When will we know more about the Adventureland project?
Hard to say. Disney doesn’t usually announce maintenance work ahead of time, and the first real clues usually show up as construction walls. With a permit running until August 2028, there’s plenty of time for those walls to go up.
For now, Jungle Cruise, the Magic Carpets and the popcorn cart are all open. The Dole Whips aren’t going anywhere.
