Sega owns both Sonic and the Angry Birds now, and Paramount releases both. The birds' third movie hits theaters Dec. 23, five days after Avengers: Doomsday.
The fastest hedgehog in video games just ran into the angriest birds.
Paramount released the second trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3 on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and it includes a first look at Sonic the Hedgehog, DiscussingFilm and Kinocheck reported. The movie opens in theaters Dec. 23.
In the shot making the rounds, Sonic tears through a jungle next to Chuck, the yellow speedster bird, who grins back at him, Comic Basics reported. Speed meets speed. Somebody was always going to do it.
How big is Sonic's part? Nobody's saying. Paramount, Sega and Rovio haven't announced whether it's a cameo or something bigger, and no one has named Sonic's voice actor for this movie.
Ben Schwartz plays Sonic in Paramount's live-action films. Don't assume he's in this one until somebody confirms it.
Here's the new trailer:
Why is Sonic in The Angry Birds Movie 3?
Because Sega owns both. Sega bought Rovio, the Finnish company behind Angry Birds, in 2023, and Sega Sammy is a producer on the new film.
Paramount is the other link. It distributes Sega's live-action Sonic movies, and in April 2025 it took over Angry Birds 3 from Sony, which released the first two films, TheWrap reported. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made $491 million worldwide, and a fourth Sonic movie is on Paramount's slate for spring 2027.
There's a people link, too. Toru Nakahara, an executive producer on the Sonic films, holds the same title on this one.
Sonic and the birds have crossed paths before, just not in a theater. Sonic and Dr. Eggman showed up in an Angry Birds Epic event in 2015, and there were later crossovers in Angry Birds Friends and Angry Birds 2.
What is The Angry Birds Movie 3 about?
Fatherhood. Red is now a full-time dad with three kids. The official tagline sums it up: "surviving fatherhood... while saving the world!"
Red and Silver's kids are teenage daughter June, teenage son Glider and hatchling Olly. There's also a pet spider named Fuzzy, because of course there is.
The new trailer is set to "Sun Showers" by Jisoo of Blackpink. It mixes family chaos with hints of a much bigger threat.
John Rice, co-director of The Angry Birds Movie 2, directs. Thurop Van Orman, who directed that 2019 sequel, wrote the screenplay. Heitor Pereira is back on the score, and DNEG Animation handles the animation.
Who is in The Angry Birds Movie 3 cast?
The returning flock includes Jason Sudeikis as Red, Josh Gad as Chuck, Rachel Bloom as Silver and Danny McBride as Bomb. Yes, Chuck is voiced by Olaf. Disney fans can't unhear it now.
The new family:
Emma Myers as June
Walker Scobell as Glider (he's also Percy Jackson on Disney+)
Psalm West as Olly
James Austin Johnson as Fuzzy
Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox of Smosh return as Hal and Bubbles.
Also in the cast: Tim Robinson, Keke Palmer, Lily James, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Marcello Hernandez, Anna Cathcart, Nikki Glaser, Sam Richardson, MrBeast and Salish Matter. Paramount hasn't spelled out most of their roles.
When does The Angry Birds Movie 3 come out?
Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2026, in theaters. It was first set for Jan. 29, 2027, before Paramount moved it up about a month.
That drops it into a crowded holiday stretch. Avengers: Doomsday opens Dec. 18, just five days earlier. The birds are betting on families who want something lighter over winter break.
The franchise has some ground to make up. The first movie made $352 million worldwide in 2016. The 2019 sequel made $152.2 million, TheWrap reported.
A blue hedgehog with a huge fan base can't hurt. Neither can MrBeast.
