Disney greenlit an animated Artemis Fowl series for Disney Channel and Disney+, with author Eoin Colfer producing. It’s a second shot after the 2020 live-action movie flopped with critics.
Artemis Fowl is getting another chance at Disney, and this time it’s animated.
Disney greenlit an animated Artemis Fowl series for Disney Channel and Disney+, the company announced Oct. 11. Author Eoin Colfer shared the news at a “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel at New York Comic Con.
Colfer is on board as an executive producer.
“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team,” Colfer said in Disney’s announcement.
What is the Artemis Fowl animated series about?
It follows the books. Artemis Fowl is a 13-year-old criminal mastermind who discovers an underground world of dangerous, high-tech fairies, according to Disney.
He plans to kidnap one of them and steal its magic to help save his sick mother and his family.
Disney calls the show an action-adventure fantasy.
When does the Artemis Fowl series come out?
Disney hasn’t said yet. So far there’s no premiere date, episode count or voice cast.
The announcement also didn’t name an animation studio or a showrunner.
Who is making the Artemis Fowl show?
Colfer is joined by executive producers Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson.
Juwono is an Emmy and Annie Award winner who worked on Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series, according to Bleeding Cool. Evanson’s credits include Prep and Landing: The Snowball Protocol, DuckTales and Monsters at Work.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said the animated series gives Disney the chance to bring the “beloved franchise to life“ for a new generation while honoring longtime fans.
What happened with the Artemis Fowl movie?
It didn’t go well. Disney’s live-action Artemis Fowl, directed by Kenneth Branagh, was supposed to hit theaters in 2019. It got delayed, and when theaters shut down during the pandemic, Disney sent it straight to Disney+ on June 12, 2020.
The movie had a reported $125 million budget, and critics weren’t kind. It holds an 8 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Reviewers knocked the plot, the effects and the changes from the novels. This time, the author is an executive producer.
Who are the main characters in Artemis Fowl?
Artemis isn’t the only one fans want to see. In the books, his loyal bodyguard is Butler, and the fairy he kidnaps is Holly Short, a captain in the fairy police force.
There’s also Mulch Diggums, a thieving dwarf, and Foaly, the fairies’ know-it-all centaur tech expert. Commander Root runs the whole operation.
In the 2020 movie, Josh Gad played Mulch and Judi Dench played Root. Disney hasn’t announced a voice cast for the series.
How popular are the Artemis Fowl books?
Very. The series has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 48 languages, according to Disney.
The first book came out in 2001, so this year marks its 25th anniversary.
The main series ran for eight books, ending with The Last Guardian in 2012. Colfer later wrote a spinoff trilogy, The Fowl Twins.
Why is Disney making Artemis Fowl again?
The books still have a big fan base, and the timing lines up with the first book’s 25th anniversary. Animation is also a natural fit for a world full of fairies, trolls and high-tech gadgets.
It’s also part of a bigger pattern. Disney has been leaning hard on characters and stories fans already know, across movies, Disney+ and its parks.
For Artemis Fowl fans, though, this is mostly about one thing: a second chance to get it right.
