The Encore re-release pushed Marvel’s 2019 hit to about $2.925 billion worldwide, per Variety. It’s the second time Endgame has taken the record from Avatar.
The Avengers have the box office crown back.
Avengers: Endgame is once again the highest-grossing movie in history, per Variety, which reported on Sunday, Oct. 4, that the film has reached about $2.925 billion worldwide. That puts it just ahead of James Cameron’s Avatar, at about $2.92 billion.
Because of a re-release.
Avengers: Endgame Encore opened in theaters on Sept. 25 and brought in another $126 million around the world, per TheWrap. That’s $36.2 million in the U.S. and Canada and $89.8 million internationally.
How much has Avengers: Endgame made?
About $2.925 billion worldwide, per Variety.
Most of that came in 2019. Endgame opened on April 26, 2019, and earned close to $2.8 billion in its first run. The Encore re-release supplied the rest.
The margin over Avatar is small. We’re talking a few million dollars on a nearly $3 billion total.
How did Avatar get the record back in the first place?
Endgame has done this before.
It first passed Avatar in July 2019, a few months after it opened. Then Avatar struck back in March 2021, when the 2009 movie was re-released in theaters in China and earned enough to pull back ahead.
So for five years, Avatar sat at No. 1 again. Marvel waited, and then used the same move: put the movie back in theaters.
What is Avengers: Endgame Encore?
The Encore version has a tweaked ending plus three new mid-credit and post-credit scenes connected to Avengers: Doomsday, per TheWrap. That gave fans a real reason to buy a ticket for a movie most of them have already seen several times.
The IMAX trailer for the re-release teases what’s new.
Is Avengers: Endgame Encore still in theaters?
It was still earning money in its second weekend, which is how it crossed the line. Re-releases usually have short runs, so if you want to see the new scenes on a big screen, check local listings soon.
The original 2019 cut of Endgame streams on Disney+.
What’s the next Avengers movie?
Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters Friday, Dec. 18, 2026.
The Russo brothers, who directed Endgame, are back. Robert Downey Jr. returns to Marvel, this time as the villain Doctor Doom.
The Encore scenes were built to lead straight into Doomsday, so Marvel got two things out of this re-release: a record, and a very public warm-up for its December movie.
What are the biggest Marvel movies at the box office?
Endgame is on top, and it isn’t close.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the first half of the same story, made more than $2 billion worldwide. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) came in just under $2 billion. Every other Marvel movie is below that.
That’s part of why Doomsday matters so much to Disney. It’s the first Avengers team-up movie since Endgame, and expectations are about as high as they get.
Could Avatar take the record back again?
Never say never with James Cameron. Avatar already came back once with a re-release. Disney owns both movies now, through its 2019 purchase of 21st Century Fox, so either way, the trophy stays in the same house.
For now, Endgame is No. 1, again, and Marvel fans get to say “I love you 3000” to the box office charts.
