Boy Meets World’s “And Then There Was Shawn” killed off Mr. Feeny, Eric and half of John Adams High in a Scream parody. It aired Feb. 27, 1998, and it’s on Disney+.
The most famous Halloween episode of Boy Meets World didn’t air anywhere near Halloween.
“And Then There Was Shawn,” the show’s slasher parody, first aired on ABC on Feb. 27, 1998, Yahoo and Polygon have reported. It’s Season 5, Episode 17.
It’s the one where a hooded killer picks off the gang one by one, Mr. Feeny gets stabbed in the back with scissors and Jennifer Love Hewitt shows up out of nowhere. Then it turns out the whole thing was in Shawn’s head.
What happens in And Then There Was Shawn?
Shawn is upset because Cory and Topanga just broke up. A fight in class lands the whole gang in detention with Mr. Feeny.
Then the episode turns into a horror movie. A killer in a black cloak and a skull mask starts stalking them through John Adams High.
The body count gets big for a TGIF sitcom:
Kenny gets a giant pencil to the forehead.
Mr. Feeny gets scissors in the back.
Eric and new student Jennifer Love Fefferman, played by Hewitt, die by books.
Angela doesn’t make it either.
The killer turns out to be Shawn himself, and the whole thing was a dream, People and Yahoo noted. When the mask comes off, Shawn is staring at his own jealousy, “his worst self,” director Jeff McCracken told Yahoo in 2016.
Was And Then There Was Shawn a Scream parody?
Yes, and it doesn’t hide it.
The killer’s black cloak and mask were meant to feel like “Scream,” McCracken said. EW’s 2022 oral history pointed out nods to “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” too, plus a pile of “South Park” jokes.
When Kenny dies, Eric yells, “Oh my God! They killed Kenny!” Of course he does.
Jeff Menell, a horror fan who used to review movies for The Hollywood Reporter, wrote the episode, EW reported.
Why did Boy Meets World’s Halloween episode air in February?
Nobody seems to know.
McCracken told Yahoo he was surprised when reminded of the date. He guessed the episode may have been bumped by some other event, or that ABC got nervous.
ABC did worry about it, at least a little. The network thought it broke the show’s format and might be too scary for kids, McCracken said.
“We had to fight for the pencil, we had to fight for the scissors,” he told Yahoo.
They shot it over three days with no studio audience, using handheld shots from the killer’s point of view instead of the show’s usual four-camera setup, McCracken said.
Why was Jennifer Love Hewitt in Boy Meets World?
She was dating Will Friedle, who played Eric, McCracken told Yahoo.
So the show wrote her in as Jennifer Love Fefferman, a new student nicknamed Feffy. Hewitt was also starring on “Party of Five” at the time, and the episode slips in a joke about that, EW noted.
She was fresh off a real slasher, too. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” opened Oct. 17, 1997, about four months before the episode aired, and made $72.6 million in North America, Box Office Mojo shows. Hewitt went back to that franchise for the 2025 “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel.
Friedle has since called their big kissing scene in the hallway “uncomfortable” to watch now, People reported in 2024.
Here’s Dead Meat’s “Kill Count” breakdown of the episode, which tallies every death:
What did the Boy Meets World cast say about it?
They mostly love it.
“I remember thinking it was the most bonkers thing in the world,” Rider Strong, who played Shawn, told EW in 2022. He’s a big horror fan, he said, and he was all in from the start.
Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga, called it “maybe the best episode in Boy Meets World history” on the cast’s “Pod Meets World” podcast, People reported. The hosts spent four episodes picking it apart in fall 2024.
Where can you watch And Then There Was Shawn?
It’s on Disney+, listed as Season 5, Episode 17 on the “Boy Meets World” page. Disney+’s one-line summary is pretty good: “The kids get a scream out of detention.”
Did Boy Meets World have other Halloween episodes?
Yes, and those aired when you’d expect.
“Who’s Afraid of Cory Wolf?” (Season 2, Oct. 28, 1994): Cory gets bitten by a runaway “wolf,” and a fortune teller says his new symptoms could mean he’s turning into a werewolf, according to TVmaze.
“The Witches of Pennbrook” (Season 5, Oct. 31, 1997): Jack’s new girlfriend turns out to be a witch, and Eric dates Sabrina, with Melissa Joan Hart crossing over from ABC’s “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” TheTVDB and TVmaze list.
So Season 5 got two horror episodes: a real Halloween one on Oct. 31 and the “Scream” spoof four months later.
What are some fun facts about And Then There Was Shawn?
There’s a creepy janitor nobody can name. Freddie the janitor was played by an extra who isn’t listed in the credits, EW noted.
Fishel loves the Kenny eulogy. She told EW one of her favorite lines on any show ever is, “We’ll always remember he was that tall.”
The cast didn’t think it was scary. Strong told EW it never occurred to them that kids might find it frightening.
It became a Halloween classic anyway. Yahoo called it one of the best Halloween episodes ever made, February air date and all.
ABC was worried it would scare the kids watching TGIF. Some of those kids clearly never got over it, in the best way.
