Netflix ordered a Bridgerton prequel limited series about young Lady Violet and her romance with Edmund Bridgerton. Shonda Rhimes is writing it, and nobody has been cast yet.
Bridgerton fans are finally getting the love story behind all those kids.
Netflix has ordered a prequel about Lady Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, the parents of the eight Bridgerton siblings. The streamer announced the untitled limited series on Oct. 8.
The news dropped in the most Bridgerton way possible. It came as a Lady Whistledown pamphlet, posted to the show’s social accounts.
What is the Bridgerton prequel about?
The series will “chronicle the early life of a young Lady Violet,” according to Netflix’s synopsis, as reported by TVLine. It will also tell the story of her romance with Edmund.
Shondaland put it more simply. The show will reveal how Violet Ledger met and fell in love with Edmund, according to Fangirlish.
Ledger is Violet’s maiden name. By the time the main series starts, she’s a widow with eight kids and a calendar full of courtships.
Who is writing the Bridgerton prequel?
Shonda Rhimes is back at the keyboard. She’ll write the series with Nicholas Nardini, and the two will also serve as co-showrunners and executive producers, TVLine reported.
Betsy Beers is an executive producer. Tom Verica will direct and executive produce.
If that team sounds familiar, it should. Rhimes created and wrote Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and Verica directed it. Rhimes is also the creator of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, so she knows a thing or two about long-running romance.
Who will play young Violet in the Bridgerton prequel?
Nobody yet. Netflix hasn’t announced any casting.
Ruth Gemmell has played Violet on Bridgerton for all four seasons. A younger Violet showed up in Queen Charlotte, which premiered May 4, 2023, played by Connie Jenkins-Greig.
Netflix hasn’t said whether Jenkins-Greig will return. On the main show, Edmund was played by Rupert Evans in flashbacks, and there’s no word yet on who plays a younger Edmund.
How did Edmund Bridgerton die?
A bee sting. Edmund died from an allergic reaction after being stung, leaving Violet to raise eight children on her own.
The main series showed his death in flashbacks in Season 2, with a young Anthony at his side. It’s one of the saddest scenes in the show, and it shaped Anthony’s whole season.
So yes, viewers already know how this romance ends. That’s never stopped a period drama before. Bring tissues.
How many kids do Violet and Edmund Bridgerton have?
Eight, and they’re named in alphabetical order:
Anthony
Benedict
Colin
Daphne
Eloise
Francesca
Gregory
Hyacinth
That’s A through H, a pattern that comes straight from Julia Quinn’s novels. Now the couple who came up with it gets a show of their own.
When is Bridgerton Season 5 coming out?
Season 5 is slated for 2027, with no exact date yet. Netflix confirmed in March that it will center on Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd, TVLine reported. Masali Baduza joins as Michaela, the cousin of Francesca’s late husband, John.
Season 4 came out in two parts this year, on Jan. 29 and Feb. 26. It followed Benedict and Sophie Baek, played by Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha.
Season 6 will focus on Eloise, played by Claudia Jessie. Netflix hasn’t given the Violet and Edmund prequel a release window yet, so it could be a while. Lady Whistledown will probably let us know.
