The Bubly x ready-to-drink Starbucks Frappuccino Basic Witch Kit came with a witch hat, a plaid scarf and drinks for $20 at Walmart.com. Three days after the announcement, it’s out of stock.
That didn’t take long.
Bubly sparkling water and ready-to-drink Starbucks Frappuccino announced a $20 Halloween costume kit on Thursday, Oct. 8, sold only at Walmart.com while supplies lasted, USA Today reported.
By Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, Walmart’s listing showed every size it still listed (small, medium and XXL) at $20 and out of stock. It wasn’t available for shipping, pickup or delivery.
What was in the Bubly and Starbucks Basic Witch Kit?
A whole costume, plus snacks for the road. According to USA Today and Sporked, the box had:
A witch hat
A plaid scarf
A “Basic Witch” T-shirt
A prop book of spells
A set of goblets
A “Live, Laugh, Levitate” sign
Two cans of Bubly Berry Sparkle Sangria
One bottle of ready-to-drink Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino
The joke is the “basic fall girl” look, the plaid-scarf, pumpkin-spice, apple-picking style that blew up on Tumblr and Pinterest in the early 2010s. Some people called it “Christian Girl Autumn.” This kit just adds a pointy hat.
Comedian and content creator Trey Kennedy teamed up with the brands to promote it, and Walmart’s listing carried his name. His part of the deal is a run of comedy posts about people who refuse to let go of “basic fall,” Sporked reported. Fair enough. Some of us have had the same plaid scarf since 2012.
Will the Basic Witch Kit come back in stock?
Nobody has said. The kit was billed as limited edition and sold “while supplies last,” so we wouldn’t count on a restock.
If you missed it, most of the pieces are easy to fake. A witch hat, a scarf and a pumpkin spice drink will get you about 90% of the way there.
What does Bubly Berry Sparkle Sangria taste like?
It’s one of two mocktail-style Bubly flavors that hit stores nationwide starting Sept. 7, per PepsiCo. Berry Sparkle Sangria blends raspberry, lemon, orange, strawberry and lime. The other new one, Paradise Paloma, is grapefruit and lime.
Both have zero calories, no alcohol and no artificial sweeteners. They’re sold in 8-packs of 12-ounce cans for a limited time, while supplies last.
So even with the kit gone, the drink part is still on grocery shelves.
Why are Bubly and Starbucks working together?
It’s less random than it sounds.
PepsiCo owns Bubly. It also makes the bottled Starbucks drinks you see in grocery store coolers, through the North American Coffee Partnership, its longtime joint venture with Starbucks. That partnership’s name is printed right on the Frappuccino’s label.
So the team-up is mostly PepsiCo pairing two drinks it already sells.
What else does Starbucks have for Halloween?
Starbucks has its own spooky lineup on the way. Starting Thursday, Oct. 22, participating locations add a Black Cat Frappuccino, a chocolate cake-flavored drink with whipped cream and cat ear-shaped chocolate, and a Black Night Cookie, USA Today reported.
Don’t mix it up with the Black Cat drink Starbucks Japan sold last fall. That one was an acai berry Frappuccino. The U.S. version is chocolate cake, start to finish.
The Halloween merch is already out. It hit stores Sept. 15, including a $16.95 cauldron mug and a $14.95 black cat Bearista bag charm, as we reported when Starbucks announced it.
That one, at least, you won’t have to refresh a Walmart page for.
