Anthony Mackie will star in the Donmar Warehouse’s headphone-audio Macbeth on Broadway in spring 2027, his first Broadway play in 16 years, before finishing his work on Avengers: Secret Wars.
Captain America is trading the shield for a crown. And a lot of blood, if he’s doing it right.
Anthony Mackie will play Macbeth on Broadway in spring 2027, Deadline reported Monday, Oct. 5. It’ll be his first Broadway play since 2010.
The production is a transfer of the Donmar Warehouse‘s Macbeth from London. Its big hook: the audience wears headphones the whole time.
How does the headphone Macbeth on Broadway work?
The Donmar version uses binaural sound, a 3D audio trick that makes voices and sound effects feel like they’re right next to your head. Sound designer Gareth Fry built it so the actors can speak quietly into microphones and still land every word.
Think witches whispering right behind you. It’s a creepy fit for Shakespeare’s creepiest play.
Max Webster, who directed the London version, is directing again. The theater and exact dates haven’t been announced, and neither has Lady Macbeth.
The trailer for the original London production, with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, gives you the idea:
When is Anthony Mackie’s Macbeth on Broadway?
Rehearsals start in February 2027, with performances in the spring. The run goes through July 2027, at eight shows a week.
Tickets aren’t on sale yet.
What did Anthony Mackie say about playing Macbeth?
He sounds like he’s treating it like a training montage. He told Deadline he’s back to vocal exercises and the gym to build his breathing back up.
“Being Captain America, kicking, punching, and flying is one thing, but being on a stage, it is a rigorous beast,” Mackie told Deadline.
He also called it one of those roles everybody dreams of playing, and called back to how he got started. “I started as a theater kid,” he said.
What Broadway shows has Anthony Mackie been in?
Before the Marvel years, Mackie was a stage actor. He trained at Juilliard and won an Obie Award in 2002.
His Broadway debut was Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in 2003. His last Broadway play was Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane in 2010, with Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell.
Sixteen years later, he’s coming back in one of the biggest roles in theater. Mackie, who grew up in New Orleans, is 48 now.
What does Macbeth mean for Avengers: Secret Wars?
Deadline reported that Mackie will finish his Avengers: Secret Wars work after the Broadway run ends in July.
Secret Wars is dated for Dec. 17, 2027. Before that, Mackie’s Sam Wilson is back as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, out Dec. 18 this year.
So his next year looks like this: Doomsday press, Shakespeare eight times a week, then back to the Avengers.
What is Macbeth about?
A Scottish general hears a prophecy from three witches that he’ll be king. Egged on by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan to make it happen.
It goes about as well as you’d expect. Guilt, ghosts, more murders and a very bad ending.
Theater people are so superstitious about it that many won’t say the title inside a theater. They call it “the Scottish play.” Mackie’s going to hear that a lot.
Where else has the Donmar Macbeth played?
The Tennant and Jumbo version opened at the Donmar in London in 2023, then moved to the West End.
It was filmed live and shown in movie theaters too. So if you can’t wait for spring, there’s already a version out there to look up.
