The chain switched every location to cooked-to-order patties on Sept. 9, which raises the obvious question about what it was doing before. The $5.99 Angus Maximus is the burger leading the change.
Carl’s Jr. announced last week that it will start cooking your burger once you ask for one.
Which does invite a follow-up question.
The chain launched what it is calling the Burger Revolution on Sept. 9, a systemwide switch to cooked-to-order patties. Burgers now hit the charbroiler after the order goes in, rather than waiting in what the company’s own release describes as traditional holding systems.
What is Carl’s Jr.’s Burger Revolution?
An operational change across every location, not a menu promotion.
Carl’s Jr. says the goal is hotter, fresher, and more consistent burgers. Brand president Iwona Alter said the chain has never been in the business of serving burgers that are “just good enough.”
The company is 85 years old, and this is the first time it has made cooked-to-order a systemwide standard.
It is also not doing it alone. Burger King, McDonald’s and Wendy’s have all been pushing food quality upgrades over the past two years, chasing the same thing: getting people to come back more often rather than just spend more per visit.
What is the Angus Maximus?
Two charbroiled 100 percent Angus beef patties with the chain’s signature seasoning, melted American cheese, sliced onions, dill pickles, and special sauce, on a buttered and toasted brioche bun.
5.7 ounces of beef. $5.99 at participating locations.
Carl’s Jr. does the math for you in its release, putting that at $1.05 per ounce of Angus beef, which is the kind of figure a company only calculates when it likes the answer.
It is a limited-time item, running through Oct. 27.
How do you get a free Angus Maximus?
Sign up for My Rewards.
New members get a free Angus Maximus with any purchase at sign-up. That offer runs through Oct. 27 as well, which gives the chain about seven weeks to find out whether the cook-to-order pitch converts a free-burger crowd into regulars.
Will my order take longer now?
Almost certainly, and nobody has said how much longer.
Cooking a patty after the order lands adds time. That is the whole trade. It is the same trade Wendy’s and a handful of better burger chains have been making for years, and it is why a drive-thru line at one of those places moves differently than at a chain holding cooked product.
If you are on a 20-minute lunch, factor it in. If you have been avoiding Carl’s Jr. because the burger arrived lukewarm, this is aimed at you.
Why is Carl’s Jr. doing this now?
Carl’s Jr.’s franchised store count dropped from 1,020 at the end of 2024 to 942 by the end of fiscal 2026. That is 78 locations gone in about two years. Company-owned stores held steady at roughly 50 across the same stretch.
Some franchisees have been struggling badly. Friendly Franchisees Corporation, which ran 65 Carl’s Jr. locations in California, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, citing the state’s $20 fast food minimum wage among its reasons.
So the chain is asking operators to add labor time to every burger at the same moment operators are closing. That is a real tension, and it is the part that determines whether the Burger Revolution survives past Oct. 27.
Carl’s Jr. has been charbroiling since 1941. The revolution, apparently, is doing it at the right time.
