Chips Ahoy’s caution-taped Mystery Glitch cookies finally have a name. Sporked reports the secret flavor is Cake Batter Bytes, revealed on Halloween as the $25,000 guessing contest closed.
The Chips Ahoy mystery cookie has been sitting on shelves wrapped in caution tape since summer. As of Halloween, the mystery is over.
The flavor is Cake Batter Bytes, Sporked reported Saturday, Oct. 31. Sporked describes it as “a sweet cake batter flavor with white chocolate chips in a chewy cookie.”
The “Bytes” part is a nod to the whole glitch theme. Chips Ahoy built the campaign around a cookie that broke through from “another flavor dimension,” as DesignRush described the launch.
What was the Chips Ahoy mystery cookie?
It’s the brand’s first-ever mystery flavor, according to Mondelez International’s launch announcement and coverage from Quartz. The official shelf name is Chips Ahoy Limited Edition Mystery Glitch Chewy Cookies.
The cookies first dropped July 30 in limited quantities on SnackWorks’ TikTok Shop, DesignRush reported. A national rollout to stores followed Aug. 10.
The packaging leaned hard into the bit. Caution tape covered up the flavor, and a QR code sent fans to a guessing site, Quartz reported. The brand’s mascot, Chip, played detective.
Mili Laddha, senior director of marketing at Mondelez, pitched it straight at younger snackers. “For Gen Z, snacking and gaming aren’t just pastimes, but how they connect, recharge and build community,” she said in the launch announcement.
How did the $25,000 Chips Ahoy contest work?
Fans could scan the pack or go to CHIPSAHOYMystery.com to submit a guess for a shot at a $25,000 grand prize. Hip2Save reported you could enter once a day.
Entries closed at 11:59 a.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 31, Quartz reported.
That lines up with the Halloween reveal.
There’s some confusion about how the winner gets picked.
Some coverage said the money goes to someone who guessed right. Quartz reported that a correct guess wasn’t required and every entry had a shot, which would make it a sweepstakes. The official rules on the contest site settle it, so check there if you entered.
We haven’t seen a winner announced yet.
What does the Chips Ahoy mystery cookie taste like?
It’s mild. Sporked’s reviewer gave it an 8 out of 10 but called the flavor tame.
“It’s hard to discern whether the mystery flavor is baked into the cookie itself or the chips,” the reviewer wrote. Tasting notes included vanilla, maybe marshmallow and the general taste of a baked good.
The internet’s favorite guess, according to Sporked, was Vanilla Moon Pie. That’s a decent swing. Cake batter and Moon Pie live on the same sugary street.
Where can you buy the Mystery Glitch cookies?
They’ve been at major grocery stores and big-box retailers. Hip2Save spotted the 9.58-ounce pack for $4.97 at Walmart in September, with a rebate deal that dropped it to $2.97. Amazon listed it for $5.49 at the time.
Now that the flavor is out, don’t be surprised if some stores swap the caution-tape packs for a regular Cake Batter label down the road. Chips Ahoy hasn’t said what happens to the cookie next or whether it stays on shelves.
Has Chips Ahoy done limited flavors like this before?
Plenty of limited runs, just not a mystery flavor until now. Its last limited edition before the glitch cookie was a Toy Story 5 cookie with a graham base, white fudge chips, chocolate candy chips and star sprinkles, Quartz reported. It sold at Walmart and ShopRite.
Chips Ahoy’s Chewy Hot Cocoa cookies, with marshmallow chips and a chocolate center, are a fan-favorite holiday drop, too. Sporked’s reviewer said they’d have ranked the mystery cookie higher if Hot Cocoa hadn’t come back recently.
Other snack brands have played the mystery game for years. Quartz pointed to Doritos, Pringles, Cap’n Crunch and Gatorade, which have all run mystery flavors.
Should you grab a pack?
If you like cake batter anything, sure. It’s a soft, chewy cookie with white chocolate chips, and the price is grocery-store normal.
If you were hoping for something truly unhinged, like a pickle cookie, this one plays it safe. At least now you know what you’ve been eating since August.
