Disney’s teen witch series Coven Academy logged 11.4 million hours viewed worldwide in its first week on Disney+ and Hulu and ranked No. 1 with teens, TheWrap reported. Here’s what’s driving it.
Disney’s witches are having a very good month.
Coven Academy, the teen fantasy series from Tim Federle, logged 11.4 million hours viewed worldwide in its first week on Disney+ and Hulu, according to Disney’s internal numbers, TheWrap reported in an exclusive on Friday, Oct. 9.
That’s on top of a launch weekend where it was the No. 1 title on Disney+, which we reported Oct. 6.
How popular is Coven Academy?
Popular with exactly the crowd Disney was aiming for.
It was the No. 1 streaming series among teens ages 12 to 17 across its premiere weekend, and it landed in the top five shows among all viewers, according to Nielsen data cited by TheWrap.
Then there’s social media. Disney posted the whole first chapter on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube on Oct. 2, and it pulled more than 30 million extra views:
18 million on TikTok
11 million on Instagram
2.4 million on YouTube
That’s a lot of Gen Alpha watching witches on their phones.
How many episodes of Coven Academy are there?
Season 1 is 21 chapters, each about 10 to 15 minutes long. That’s shorter than a typical Disney series episode.
Federle told TheWrap the show actually shot 10 episodes and then cut them into 21 chapters.
“What if we did more episodes, more cliffhangers, more propulsion,” he said of the idea.
All of them dropped at once. The show premiered Thursday, Oct. 1 on Freeform, and the full season started streaming the next day on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform on demand.
What is Coven Academy about?
It’s set at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans, where “power is currency.” The story follows three teenage witches and their “dangerously charming” warlock classmates.
The main cast includes Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass and Louis Thresher. Tiffani Thiessen and Devon Sawa are in it too, which should get the parents’ attention.
Federle also created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, so he’s done the Disney teen ensemble thing before. He wrote the book Better Nate Than Ever too, and directed its Disney+ movie in 2022.
Here’s the official trailer.
Where can you watch Coven Academy?
All 21 chapters stream on Disney+ and Hulu, and on demand through Freeform.
If you want to try it before committing, Disney posted the full first chapter for free on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram. That’s the same one that racked up those 30 million-plus social views. It’s a quick watch, and Federle built the chapters around cliffhangers, so good luck stopping at one.
What do critics think of Coven Academy?
They liked it early. As of Oct. 5, the show had a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, from seven reviews, as we reported at the time.
Not everyone was on board before it aired. In September, the group One Million Moms launched a pledge against the show over its witchcraft theme.
Will there be a Coven Academy Season 2?
Disney hasn’t announced one yet.
Numbers like these usually don’t hurt a show’s chances, and the timing right before Halloween didn’t either. Until Disney says so, though, Season 1 is all there is.
The good news is that 21 short chapters is a pretty easy binge. You can probably finish it before trick-or-treating.
