D23 News: Avatar at Disney California Adventure just got its first model
The project has been quiet for two years. Imagineering put a rockwork model and a ride vehicle model on the D23 show floor Thursday, a full day before the parks panel.
There’s a model. After two years of very little, that’s the news.
The Avatar destination headed for Disney California Adventure turned up at the Imagineering: Horizons pavilion Thursday night with a rockwork model and a ride vehicle model on display.
Disney describes it as an early glimpse. Fans who have been waiting for proof the project still exists will take it.
What the Avatar model at D23 actually shows
Two pieces, per Disney’s own description of the pavilion.
A rockwork model of the land, and a model of a ride vehicle.
The size of the people compared to the rock wall paints a vivid picture of the scale of this area.
It is very different from the Pandora area at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World.
Why the Avatar land showing up Thursday matters
The Horizons: A Carousel of Progress showcase runs Saturday at 7 p.m. Pacific and streams on Disney+.
Avatar didn’t wait for it. The model went out on the show floor at a Thursday press preview, which is how Disney handles a project it wants confirmed rather than one it wants applauded.
Whether that means Saturday has something bigger on Avatar, or means Saturday has nothing on Avatar and this was the whole play, is not something anybody outside the building knows yet.
What’s still missing on the Avatar project at Disneyland
No opening date. No attraction names. No confirmed ride system, and no land name that Disney is using publicly.
Disney has also been quietly lowering the temperature on this weekend, telling fans to expect progress updates rather than a 2024-style avalanche of new announcements. A rockwork model fits that description exactly.
Two days from now the parks community will know whether Avatar got a segment or a slide. For the moment, it got a rock.
