Greg Heffley spends Christmas at an all-inclusive island resort in the first trailer for Disney+'s fifth animated Wimpy Kid movie. In Jeff Kinney's book, it's the same resort where his parents honeymooned.
Greg Heffley wanted a normal Christmas at home. His family booked a tropical resort instead, and Disney+ just released the first trailer to prove it.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway streams Friday, Dec. 4, on Disney+. That's exactly 30 days after the trailer dropped Wednesday.
In Disney's synopsis, the stressed-out Heffleys make a last-minute call to escape the holidays at an all-inclusive island resort. Greg is not on board. The family soon learns "paradise may not be everything it's cracked up to be."
The movie adapts Kinney's 12th book, The Getaway, from 2017. In the book, the resort, Isla de Corales, is where Greg's parents went on their honeymoon. It has since switched its focus to adults, which is great news for exactly zero Heffley kids.
Here's the first trailer for Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway:
What happens in Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway?
Disney is keeping the trailer plot light. The synopsis says "hilarious hijinks ensue" and asks whether the trip will "end in disaster."
If the movie sticks to the book, the answer is yes. Kinney's version piles on a tarantula scare, a popped banana boat and a box jellyfish run-in. The family eventually gets kicked out of the resort. Light spoilers, sure, but the book has been out for nine years.
The holiday title is new, though. The book was simply The Getaway. Disney added "Christmas" to the front, like it did with 2023's Cabin Fever.
Who is in the voice cast?
Most of the Heffley household is back, plus a few famous guests:
Jacob Isaac Peterson as Greg Heffley
Chris Diamantopoulos as Frank Heffley, Greg's dad
Erica Cerra as Susan Heffley, Greg's mom
Hunter Dillon as Rodrick, Greg's older brother
Gracen Newton as Manny, Greg's little brother
Jude Zarzaur as Rowley, Greg's best friend
Fred Armisen as the Director of Fun
Beau Bridges as Captain Stubbard
Jeff Hiller as the First Class Flight Attendant
Keyla Monterroso Mejia as the Receptionist
Greg has a new voice, again. Peterson takes over from Aaron D. Harris, who voiced him in last year's The Last Straw. Wesley Kimmel had the job in Cabin Fever, and Brady Noon voiced Greg in the first animated movie. Real kids grow up. Greg, famously, does not.
Diamantopoulos and Cerra have played Mom and Dad Heffley since at least Cabin Fever, so the parents are the steady ones. As usual.
Who made the new Wimpy Kid movie?
Matt Danner directs. He also directed The Last Straw, which hit Disney+ in December 2025.
Kinney wrote the script himself and is producing, Laughing Place reported. He has written all five animated movies.
John Paesano and Adam Hochstatter are scoring it, Film Music Reporter reported. Paesano scored the first three animated films, and the pair teamed up on The Last Straw.
How many Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are on Disney+?
Four animated ones so far, and almost all of them landed in early December:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dec. 3, 2021
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules: Dec. 2, 2022
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever: Dec. 8, 2023
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw: Dec. 5, 2025
The Getaway makes five. Add the four live-action movies 20th Century Fox released in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2017, and it's the ninth Wimpy Kid movie overall. Disney picked up the franchise when it bought Fox.
2024 was the only skipped year. Greg probably spent it hiding in his room.
When can you watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: The Getaway?
Dec. 4 on Disney+, worldwide, What's On Disney Plus reported. A Disney+ subscription is all you need.
That gives families a full month to rewatch the first four. Or to plan a tropical vacation of their own. Just maybe skip the banana boat.
