Disney and Webtoon Unveil Major Deal Bringing Marvel, Star Wars, and More to Mobile Comics
Disney has struck a groundbreaking partnership with Webtoon that brings iconic franchises like Marvel and Star Wars—and even 20th Century Studios titles—to a new generation of digital readers.
What the Deal Includes
According to reports, the agreement will make over 100 Disney-owned comics available on the Webtoon platform, formatted for vertical scrolling. This lineup will include beloved titles such as The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, and Star Wars, all optimized for mobile readers. New original content based on these franchises is also in development, and will roll out over the coming years. The comics will appear in a dedicated section of the Webtoon app, blending legendary storytelling with a fresh format tailored to digital consumption.
This move comes after Warner Bros.-owned DC Comics had success after teaming up with the popular comic app.
When will it start?
Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man will debut later this month and then Marvel’s Avengers, Alien, and Disney’s As Old As Time: A Twisted Tale will follow. Finally, the Star Wars comic from Jason Aaron will also drop.
More information will be available during the New York Comic Con as Webtoon is set to promote at the event running from October 9-12.
About 100 titles are set to drop onto the comics app over the next several years.
A Win for Webtoon and Disney
Yongsoo Kim, Chief Strategy Officer of Webtoon, praised the collaboration’s potential, stating that the Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars brands are among the most successful in the industry, and that this partnership ushers in a new era of storytelling for mobile-native audiences.
On Disney’s end, Executive Vice President Daniel Fink highlighted that this collaboration allows Disney properties to engage with Webtoon’s vast global audience in a dynamic, modern format.
No details on the financials have been revealed, but Fink said it’s “one of the biggest” deals they have done.
Context: Webtoon’s Rapid Growth and Ambitions
Webtoon, which recently went public, has seen substantial expansion over the past decade. Their revenue model now spans paid content, advertising, and licensing. Notably, Webtoon has formed creative partnerships with major IP holders such as DC Entertainment, Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed), and McDonald’s, and they also teamed up with Archie Comics to launch Big Ethel Energy.
Their partnership with Disney continues this momentum, offering a streamlined, accessible way to enjoy major comic franchises on mobile devices.
Both Disney and Webtoon have said that none of the comics will use AI technology.
Why This Matters
This collaboration signals a bold shift in how classic comic universes reach audiences.
Webtoon fans gain access to richer, established universes like the Marvel and Star Wars sagas.
Disney and Marvel gain direct exposure to mobile-savvy audiences in a fast-growing digital space.
Creators and fans benefit from storytelling designed for vertical scrolling and immediate accessibility.
The move is likely to attract new readers to Webtoon and brings Disney’s biggest franchises into format-friendly territory, ensuring relevance in evolving digital media landscapes.
