Disney’s fall theatrical slate includes a brand-new original from Walt Disney Animation Studios, an Endgame re-release, a Tony Gilroy thriller, and Avengers: Doomsday. Yet no one is really talking about Hexed.
Walt Disney Animation Studios has an original film opening in 81 days.
“Hexed” arrives Nov. 25, and it has drawn a fraction of the attention going to the sequels around it.
No one is really talking about it. Which is a problem.
Disney published its full fall theatrical calendar this week. Here is what is actually coming.
What is Disney’s Hexed
Disney has described it as an all-new original film from Walt Disney Animation Studios.
People aren’t talking about it very much. The film has stayed largely out of the conversation while “Zootopia 3” and “Frozen 3” dominate coverage.
Disney Animation’s recent originals have had mixed theatrical fortunes. “Wish” underperformed. “Strange World” lost money. “Encanto” found its audience largely on streaming after a modest theatrical run.
“Hexed” opens over Thanksgiving weekend, the slot “Frozen”, “Moana,” and “Encanto” all launched from.
Every Disney movie coming to theaters this fall
Seven releases between now and the end of the year.
“Cars” returned for its 20th anniversary on Sept. 4.
“Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger” follows Sept. 11.
Marvel Studios’ “Avengers Endgame: Encore” arrives Sept. 25.
“Portrait of an Artist: Stephen Curry” opens Oct. 9.
Disney’s “Hexed” lands Nov. 25.
Searchlight Pictures’ “Behemoth!” opens Dec. 4.
Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday” closes the year on Dec. 18.
Avengers Endgame is returning to theaters
“Avengers Endgame: Encore” arrives Sept. 25, roughly three months before “Avengers: Doomsday” opens on Dec. 18.
Doomsday brings Robert Downey Jr. back as Doctor Doom, with the Russo brothers directing and heroes drawn from three universes. Tickets are already on sale.
Putting Endgame back on screens in the run-up is straightforward groundwork.
What is Behemoth!
Tony Gilroy’s next film comes from Searchlight Pictures on Dec. 4.
Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde star. Gilroy created “Andor” for Disney+ and wrote the Bourne films.
Another film we are hearing very little about. It seems Disney is putting most of the effort behind Marvel.
How Disney’s year has gone
The studio is coming off unusually strong numbers.
Disney describes itself as fresh off a $4 billion box office year.
“Toy Story 5” passed $1.1 billion globally, taking the biggest opening weekend in franchise history domestically, internationally and worldwide, and the second-largest animated debut ever in North America behind “Incredibles 2.”
It reaches Disney+ on Sept. 23.
Disney has not announced a marketing push for “Hexed”, which at 81 days out, so they better get on that.
