Business Insider reports that product and technology staff who had kept remote exemptions are now being asked in four days a week, closing a gap that has stayed open since the policy took effect in 2023.
Disney is closing one of the last doors left open on remote work.
According to Business Insider, additional remote product and technology employees have been told to report to company offices four days a week. The change narrows exemptions that certain technical teams had held onto while most of the company was already on the four-day schedule.
It is the first meaningful tightening of the policy under chief executive Josh D’Amaro.
What is Disney’s return to office policy?
The four-day rule is not new, which is the part that makes this interesting.
Bob Iger announced it on Jan. 9, 2023, in a memo to employees, with the policy taking effect March 1 that year. Hybrid staff were asked to be on-site Monday through Thursday.
Iger’s stated reasoning was creative rather than financial. His argument was that the work Disney does depends on people being in a room together.
That argument has now outlasted the man who made it. Iger has handed the company to D’Amaro, and the rule is still there, still four days, still being enforced further down the org chart.
Which Disney employees are affected?
Product and technology teams, per Business Insider’s reporting.
These are the people who build and maintain the things guests touch without thinking about them. The My Disney Experience app. Ticketing systems. Lightning Lane infrastructure. The back end that has to hold up when a park opens.
Technical roles were among the likeliest to keep working remotely after 2023, partly because the labor market for engineers made flexibility a real recruiting tool.
Disney has not put out a public statement on the change.
What happened the last time Disney did this?
It did not go quietly.
After Iger’s 2023 memo, more than 2,300 Disney employees signed a petition asking him to reconsider. The Washington Post reported at the time that staffers with disabilities, young children and other circumstances requiring remote work submitted testimonials as part of it.
The petition argued the mandate would push out hard-to-replace talent rather than improve output.
The policy went into effect anyway.
There is no indication yet of similar organized pushback this time, though the affected group is much smaller and the news is only hours old.
Where this fits
Disney has spent 2026 tightening in several directions at once. The company cut roughly 1,000 roles in April as it consolidated marketing under a single enterprise organization, the first large restructuring of D’Amaro’s tenure.
Closing remote exemptions is a smaller move than a layoff, and it should not be confused with one. Nobody is losing a job over it.
But it lands on the same people, in the same year, from the same management.
The four-day rule turns four in March. Some of the people it was written for are only now finding out it applies to them.
