Michael Jackson's Captain EO sidekick is coming back as a D23 plush
The interactive plush of Michael Jackson’s winged sidekick from the 1986 3D attraction debuts at D23, riding a wave of renewed interest after the Michael biopic crossed $1 billion. For a cautious family brand, it’s a bold dip back into its strangest, most complicated collaboration.
Disney is putting Fuzzball back on a shelf.
If you have no idea who Fuzzball is, that’s the whole story right there. He’s the fuzzy orange winged creature who flew alongside Michael Jackson in Captain EO, a 17-minute 3D movie that played in Disney parks starting in 1986, and Disney is about to sell a talking plush of him at D23 this year.
What’s actually being sold
The item is an interactive Fuzzball plush with what Disney calls “authentic sounds,” meaning it makes the noises the little guy made in the film. It debuts at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event before hitting DisneyStore.com.
He’s in good company on the collectibles table. Disney’s also rolling out a José animatronic from the Enchanted Tiki Room and a limited-edition Redd doll from Pirates of the Caribbean. Deep-cut parks nostalgia, basically, aimed straight at the people who remember these things.
But Fuzzball is the one carrying baggage, because Fuzzball comes from the weirdest thing Disney ever made.
What on earth Captain EO was
Picture the biggest pop star on the planet, in 1986, at the absolute peak of his fame. Now hand him to the director of The Godfather, bankroll it with the guy who made Star Wars, and give them 17 minutes of 3D film and a reported budget that made it, minute for minute, one of the most expensive movies ever shot.
That was Captain EO. Francis Ford Coppola directed it. George Lucas produced it. Jackson played a bumbling space captain leading a crew of aliens, Fuzzball among them, on a mission to bring music and light to a grim planet ruled by a witch queen, whom he transforms into a beautiful ruler by singing and dancing at her. It is exactly as strange as that sounds, and stranger.
It ran at Epcot and Disneyland for years, and a generation of kids filed into those theaters, put on the glasses, and watched Michael Jackson shoot rainbows out of his hands. Then it quietly closed.
Why now: the Michael of it all
Fuzzball isn’t coming back by accident. Michael Jackson is having a moment again.
The Michael biopic, with Jaafar Jackson playing his uncle and Antoine Fuqua directing, became one of 2026’s biggest films and crossed a billion dollars worldwide. A blockbuster like that pulls the whole catalog back into the light, the music, the memorabilia, and yes, the one time Michael Jackson made a movie with Disney.
Disney noticed the wave and grabbed a surfboard. A dormant piece of parks history suddenly has a reason to exist on a store shelf again.
The part Disney is choosing not to dwell on
Here’s what makes this more interesting than a nostalgia drop.
Michael Jackson is one of the most contested figures in pop culture, and how people feel about celebrating him ranges from adoration to outright refusal, with everything in between.
Disney is a company that manages its image with famous caution. It does not, as a rule, wade back into complicated associations without a reason.
Which is what makes the Fuzzball plush a small tell. The biopic’s billion dollars apparently made the math work again. Disney has done this dance before, too, reviving Captain EO at the parks as a tribute after Jackson died in 2009 and running it for a few more years before retiring it a second time.
The attraction keeps coming back whenever the moment feels right, and the moment, commercially, feels right.
Fuzzball’s very strange afterlife
One last thing for the true sickos, because Fuzzball’s story didn’t end when Captain EO closed.
The character was quietly folded into official Star Wars canon, appearing in a 2024 episode of Skeleton Crew. So a creature invented for a Michael Jackson 3D musical is now, technically, a real part of the Star Wars universe.
Vintage Fuzzball plushes from the ‘80s already move briskly on the collector market, and a new talking one is going to sell out at D23 in about four minutes.
Captain EO was always the oddest sentence in Disney’s history: the King of Pop, the Godfather director, the Star Wars creator, and a winged space monkey, all crammed into one 3D short. A plush toy of that monkey that giggles when you squeeze it might be the most normal thing to ever come out of it.
