The programmable LED strips that traced the EPCOT logo behind Spaceship Earth lasted a little over two years. Crews pulled them out in August and started filling the empty channels with concrete.
The glowing walkways at World Celebration Gardens are done.
Not being repaired. Not being upgraded. Filled in with concrete and paved flat.
Crews at EPCOT removed the in-ground lighting strips from the curved walkways around the central planter behind Spaceship Earth in August, and the same day, photographers caught them pouring themed concrete into the empty channels.
What happened to EPCOT’s in-ground lighting?
It never really worked, and the trouble started almost immediately.
World Celebration Gardens opened in December 2023 as the centerpiece of EPCOT’s multi-year overhaul, replacing the old Fountain of Nations. Embedded LED fixtures traced the EPCOT logo across the pavement and were programmed to sync with the lighting shows on Spaceship Earth.
Then Central Florida happened to it.
Water got into the underground housings. Summer heat warped the clear covers, which lifted and left raised edges in the middle of a walkway that thousands of people cross every hour.
By 2025, maintenance crews were securing loose sections with deck screws and caulk. That fix was visible from ten feet away, and it did not hold. Sections of the walkway were roped off again within weeks.

Are there still open holes at EPCOT?
Reports circulating over the last few days describe open trenches sitting in active walkways as an ongoing tripping hazard, particularly after dark. The framing is that Disney still cannot fix the problem.
What the photographic record actually shows is closer to the opposite. The strips came out on Aug. 18. Crews were filling the channels with concrete the same day. A follow-up pass at the opposite side of World Celebration Gardens found that section filled in as well.
Empty channels did exist, briefly, between extraction and fill. That is what a construction sequence looks like. Whether any remain open right now is a question a photo from this morning could settle, and no one making the claim appears to have one.
If you are heading to EPCOT this week, the honest advice is the same either way. Watch the pavement behind Spaceship Earth after dark, because the area was designed with low ambient lighting on purpose.
What EPCOT had before the LED walkways
EPCOT’s original Future World pathways carried fiber-optic twinkle lights embedded in the pavement. They sat flush, they ran for decades, and they did not require a maintenance crew with a box of screws.
Those were removed during the transformation that produced World Celebration Gardens.
So Disney took out a pavement lighting system that worked, replaced it with a more advanced one that failed within three years, and has now replaced that with gray concrete.
Plus, the garden is often mocked for looking like a female body part.
What’s left at World Celebration Gardens
The walkways still trace the same EPCOT logo pattern in the pavers. The shape survived even if the light did not.
CommuniCore Hall and CommuniCore Plaza are unaffected, and the Points of Light shows on Spaceship Earth still run. The ground simply does not interact.
Disney has not put out a statement about the removal, which is normal. The company rarely announces the retirement of an effect that was never announced as retired.
The concrete is a fine walkway. It is also a very quiet way to end a multi-million-dollar idea, and the only people who will notice are the ones who saw it work.
