Disney Legend Bob Gurr, the Imagineer behind the monorail, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Autopia, turned 95 on Sunday. Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro marked it with a photo.
If it rolls, floats or zooms at Disneyland, there’s a good chance Bob Gurr had a hand in it. And on Sunday, the Disney Legend turned 95.
Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro shared a photo of the two of them at D23 on Instagram to mark the day, WDW News Today reported. “Happy 95th birthday to a true Disney Legend,” D’Amaro wrote.
Gurr was born Oct. 25, 1931, in Los Angeles, according to D23. He worked alongside Walt Disney himself, WDWNT noted.
He joked for years that if something at Disneyland moves on wheels, he probably designed it, D23 said. He’s not exaggerating by much.
Chip Foose sat down with Gurr last month to talk about those designs:
What did Bob Gurr design at Disney?
A lot of the rides you’ve been on. D23 credits him with more than 100 attraction designs.
Some of the big ones:
The Autopia cars
The Matterhorn Bobsleds
The Disneyland and Walt Disney World monorails
Tomorrowland’s Flying Saucers
Main Street, U.S.A.’s antique cars and double-decker buses
The ride system for Ford’s Magic Skyway at the 1964 World’s Fair
He also helped build the moving parts inside Disney’s first Audio-Animatronics human, Abraham Lincoln, according to D23.
The Haunted Mansion’s Doom Buggies are his, too, WDWNT reported. Laughing Place credits him with the Omnimover ride system that keeps those buggies rolling.
How did Bob Gurr start at Disney?
With cars. WED Enterprises, the company that became Walt Disney Imagineering, brought him in to consult on the little cars for Autopia in 1954, WDWNT and D23 reported.
Walt liked what he saw and asked him to stay. Gurr had graduated from Art Center College of Design in 1952, on a General Motors scholarship.
He left Imagineering in 1981 to start his own company, GurrDesign, and kept building things that move.
D23 lists King Kong and Conan’s serpent for Universal Studios among his later work, along with the UFO that landed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics closing ceremony. He also consulted on the giant Ursula at Tokyo DisneySea and the animated T. rex for Jurassic Park.
The Themed Entertainment Association gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, D23 noted.
Disney named him a Disney Legend in 2004.
Is Bob Gurr still working with Disney?
Yes, and at 95 he’s busier than most of us. Disney said in August that Gurr is consulting on the reimagined Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom, WDWNT reported.
That new version, shown at D23 in August, will run from the 1960s into the future. Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston voice Mother and Father, as PNP reported.
Next month, he’s going into the IAAPA Theme Park Hall of Fame. He’ll be inducted Nov. 16 at the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, Laughing Place reported, alongside Chip Cleary, Jeffrey Ellis and Miguel Quintana Pali.
Then in March 2027, he’s set to be a guest speaker on a two-hour tour inside Walt Disney’s restored private plane, “The Mouse,” according to WDWNT.
Disney World fans of a certain age may remember that plane. Walt’s Gulfstream sat out on the Studio Backlot Tour at what’s now Disney’s Hollywood Studios for years before the tour closed in 2014.
This time, Gurr gets to be the tour guide.
Why does Bob Gurr matter to Disney fans?
Because you’ve probably ridden his work without knowing his name. The monorail he helped design still glides over Disneyland, more than 65 years after it debuted in 1959.
The Matterhorn Bobsleds, from that same year, still rattle through the mountain. And kids still steer his Autopia cars down a track that opened with the park in 1955.
He even wrote a book about his life in design, Design: Just for Fun, which came out in 2012.
Not a bad career for a guy Disney first called in to help with some go-karts. Happy birthday, Bob.
