Disney Releases PRIDE Month Merchandise During Backlash From Abu Dhabi Park Announcement.
Disney has released its PRIDE month merchandise for 2025 on Shop Disney, but they are doing so after causing backlash in the LGBTQIA+ community with the announcement of a new park in the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE is an area that is not usually accepting of the LGBTQIA+ community, and they feel that Disney is betraying them by building their most “advanced” theme park in a place they feel isn’t safe for them to go.
These fans have seen Disney publicly go against Governor DeSantis in Florida over the Parental Rights in Education Bill, which cost Walt Disney World its control over the Reedy Creek Improvement District.
Disney claimed they canceled the Lake Nona Imagineering campus because of the leadership in Florida.
The Walt Disney Company doubled down on representation via their Stories Matter and Reimagine Tomorrow initiatives. All of this led the LGBTQIA+ community to think that Disney sided with their causes.
However, Disney has been walking back a lot of these actions. The Stories Matter group and Reimagine Tomorrow have been removed. Disney shelved or changed certain episodes of shows and reportedly made sure “Inside Out 2” was “less gay.”
Disney is trying to go back to the center and chase the money with its new theme parks and films. While some wonder if Disney is dropping support for more progressive causes, they seem just fine with taking LGBTQIA+ money state-side via rainbow merchandise.
Here is the new collection for 2025.
This year’s collection includes household items, a Spirit Jersey, ears, toys, and more!
This is what is up right now. I’m not sure if more will be added, but it seems like there are fewer items than in previous years.
The Stitch plush is timely given the live-action “Lilo and Stitch” is opening on May 23.
What do you think? Does Disney have a double standard or are they just doing what’s best for the company financially?
