Tim Federle’s witchy teen drama is coming back after pulling 20.3 million viewing hours in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. Disney hasn’t set a premiere date yet.
The witches of Crescent Veil are getting another semester.
Disney has renewed Coven Academy for a second season, Deadline and Variety reported Monday, Oct. 26. TheWrap was first with the news, according to Laughing Place.
The supernatural teen drama premiered on Freeform on Oct. 1 and on Disney+ and Hulu the next day. Disney hasn’t announced when Season 2 will arrive.
Here’s the Season 1 trailer, from Rotten Tomatoes TV:
How well did Coven Academy do?
Well enough to earn a quick renewal. Season 1 racked up 20.3 million hours viewed worldwide in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, according to Disney. PNP reported Oct. 12 that it had pulled 11.4 million hours in its first week alone.
The first chapter also drew more than 30 million views on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, Deadline reported.
Nielsen numbers were strong, too, according to Deadline:
No. 1 streaming series among teens 12 to 17 over its premiere weekend
Top 5 among all viewers, measured by views
Half of viewers ages 12 to 17, and nearly two-thirds of kids ages 6 to 11, watched with an adult
That last stat matters to Disney. It means families are watching together.
What is Coven Academy about?
Three teenage witches at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans. In Disney’s words, it’s a place “where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability.”
Briar arrives at Crescent Veil with questions about her mother’s death. The head of school, Miss Graves, tasks her with forming a coven with classmates Sasha and Tegan, as the girls get pulled into ancient supernatural wars and forbidden romances.
The cast includes:
Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar
Malachi Barton as Jake
Jordan Leftwich as Sasha
Ora Duplass as Tegan
Louis Thresher as Ollie
Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves
Devon Sawa guest-starred as warlock teacher Mr. Cole.
Who makes Coven Academy?
Tim Federle, who created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He executive produces with Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist, according to Deadline.
It’s from Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions with Disney Kids and Family. Federle has called it a tribute to Charmed, Dawson’s Creek and The Vampire Diaries, according to Disney.
The show’s format is a little different. Season 1 has 21 short “chapters,” Variety reported, and MickeyBlog noted that they run 10 to 22 minutes each.
It was first meant to be the first young adult series on Disney Channel, Variety reported, before Disney moved it to Freeform and streaming.
What could happen in Coven Academy Season 2?
Spoilers ahead for the Season 1 finale.
Season 1 ended with some big reveals, including that Miss Graves is Briar’s biological mother, TVLine reported. Sasha’s presumed-dead brother, Mason, also turned out to be alive, and a vampire. Federle told TVLine that Briar will likely have “a lot of questions” for Miss Graves about why she was given away.
He also said Ollie will likely head home to Bristol to come out as a vampire to his family, and Tegan will stand by McKenna, according to TVLine.
Federle told Variety that the mother-daughter story is where he sees the fun: “what makes a mother and daughter so dangerous when they’re together.”
Where can you watch Coven Academy?
Season 1 is streaming now on Disney+ and Hulu, and on Freeform On Demand, according to Deadline. Episodes are also airing on Freeform this month as part of its 31 Nights of Halloween, TVLine reported.
The show drew pushback before it premiered. One Million Moms objected to its witchcraft, as PNP reported Sept. 20.
The viewers clearly showed up anyway, and Halloween week is a good time to catch up before Season 2 casts its spell.
