Cemetery Boys author Aiden Thomas wrote Remember Me, which sends a 15-year-old Coco into the Land of the Dead. The 400-page hardcover is $20.99 and arrives June 29, 2027.
Coco finally gets her own trip across the marigold bridge. It's just going to happen in a book.
Disney Books revealed the cover Wednesday for Remember Me, a new A Twisted Tale novel inspired by Pixar's Coco, Laughing Place reported. The publisher's pitch asks the big question up front: "What if Coco went to the Land of the Dead?"
The author is Aiden Thomas, the New York Times bestselling writer of Cemetery Boys. Laughing Place's reveal didn't name the author, but the Penguin Random House listing does.
Remember Me hits shelves June 29, 2027. The hardcover is $20.99 and runs 400 pages, for ages 12 and up. It's up for preorder now, with an ebook and a 12-hour audiobook also listed.
Neither the reveal nor the listing credits a cover artist yet.
What is Remember Me about?
In this version, Coco is the kid with the music problem, not Miguel.
Coco Rivera turns 15, and her family still won't allow music in the house, not even at her quinceanera. On Dia de Muertos, she sings a forbidden song and gets swept into the Land of the Dead.
There, her voice helps Lost Souls remember what they've forgotten. She goes looking for her father and crosses paths with La Llorona, described as "a haunted mother whose sorrow threatens to consume" both worlds.
Quick refresher on why that's a big swing. In the movie, Coco is Miguel's great-grandmother, and her father, Hector, wrote "Remember Me" for her. So a teenage Coco hunting for her dad in the Land of the Dead flips the whole family story around.
La Llorona isn't a character in the film. She's the weeping woman of Mexican folklore, though "La Llorona" is also a song Imelda sings in Coco. Laughing Place noted she has been haunting Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, too.
Who is Aiden Thomas?
A Portland, Oregon, author with a real Dia de Muertos connection. Thomas told KOIN in 2021 that Dia de los Muertos is "my favorite holiday."
Cemetery Boys (2020) follows Yadriel, a trans boy from a family of brujx who tries to summon his cousin's ghost and gets the wrong one. Publishers Weekly reported it made Thomas the first openly trans author to hit the New York Times fiction bestseller list with a trans-centered book.
Thomas has already done a Disney-adjacent retelling, too. Lost in the Never Woods (2021) is a dark take on Peter Pan told from Wendy Darling's point of view.
The Penguin Random House bio also lists The Sunbearer Trials and Celestial Monsters. So a Coco novel is a pretty natural next stop.
What is A Twisted Tale?
Disney's young adult series of "What if" retellings. It started in 2015 with Liz Braswell's A Whole New World, based on Aladdin.
More than 20 novels later, it has covered:
Fate Be Changed (2024), Farrah Rochon's take on Brave
Sally's Lament (2024), Mari Mancusi's take on The Nightmare Before Christmas
Be Prepared (2024), Rochon's take on The Lion King
How Far I'll Go (2025), Keala Kendall's take on Moana
So Coco isn't the first Pixar movie to get twisted. Brave got there first.
When is Coco's 10th anniversary?
Nov. 22, 2027. Coco opened in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2017, which means Remember Me lands about five months before the movie turns 10.
Coco won Oscars for best animated feature and best original song, for "Remember Me." So naming the novel after that song isn't subtle. It also isn't wrong.
The Rivera family isn't done on screen, either. Disney announced Coco 2 in March 2025, with Lee Unkrich returning to direct alongside Adrian Molina. It's set for 2029.
That leaves a long stretch between now and the next Coco movie. A 400-page detour through the Land of the Dead should help with the wait.
