The Datapad is gone. So is the Fab 50 game, and every queue trivia round you ever played while waiting for Slinky Dog Dash. DuckTales hunt at EPCOT is closed but will return in a new format.
Disney pulled the plug on Play Disney Parks on Tuesday, and it went out quietly enough that plenty of guests will find out the hard way.
The app launched June 30, 2018, built to give people something to do in lines and something extra to do inside themed lands. It shut down Sept. 16, 2026, a little over eight years later.
There is no replacement.
What did you lose when Play Disney Parks shut down?
More than most people realize, and the Star Wars stuff hurts worst.
The Datapad inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is gone. That covered hacking droids, scanning crates, tuning into transmissions, and translating Aurebesh signage around Black Spire Outpost. For a land built to be played rather than just walked through, it was a real chunk of the experience.
DuckTales World Showcase Adventure, the scavenger hunt that sent guests around EPCOT’s pavilions, will return in a new format!
The ACE Guide to Pandora over at Animal Kingdom. Fab 50 Quest, the augmented reality hunt tied to the golden statues from the 50th anniversary.
Then the queue games, which is where most people actually used the thing. Trivia and mini-games ran at Slinky Dog Dash, Space Mountain, Soarin’, Jungle Cruise, and others.
Every achievement and digital badge you earned went with it.
Does Batuu Bounty Hunters still work at Galaxy’s Edge?
Yes.
Batuu Bounty Hunters keeps running because it never needed the app. It works through MagicBand+ and the physical screens installed around the land, so it outlived the platform everything else lived on.
If you are heading to Galaxy’s Edge hoping for interactivity, that is what is left.
Is Disney replacing the Play Disney Parks app?
Disney has not announced a replacement, a migration, or a plan.
Nothing has been confirmed as moving into My Disney Experience. Nothing has been promised for later. The company did not hold an event or issue much in the way of explanation, which is a large part of why the reaction on fan forums has been irritated rather than sad.
The question people keep asking is whether any of this comes back behind a paywall. There is no answer to that yet, and nobody at Disney has offered one.
Why did Disney kill it?
The short version is that most guests never used it.
Play Disney Parks asked people to download a second Disney app, on top of My Disney Experience, and then open it while standing in line. In practice, most people in that line are on their own phones doing their own thing. Adoption stayed low for years.
MagicBand+ has had a similar problem. It launched with interactive features built around gestures and light-up effects, and it never became the thing guests organized a trip around.
Disney has been simplifying instead. The My Disney Experience app is getting a redesign with AI-assisted search, and DisneyWorld.com rolled out a new guided search tool on Sept. 15 alongside a homepage with far fewer navigation links.
What this means on your next trip
Check your phone before you go and clear the app off it.
The queue games are the loss that will sting quietly and often, mostly because nobody thinks about them until they are standing in a 50-minute line with nothing to look at.
The free interactive layer is now gone.
