Walt Disney World and the Orlando Magic extended their jersey deal, and the arena’s redesigned Disney atrium has Tinker Bell flying across a wall of park icons.
Orlando’s two biggest names in entertainment just renewed their vows.
Walt Disney World and the Orlando Magic extended their sponsorship and jersey deal on Monday, Oct. 12, so the Disney brand stays on Magic uniforms, the team said. They also showed off a redesigned Walt Disney World Atrium inside the Kia Center, the Magic’s downtown arena.
On Oct. 17, the Kia Center shared a first look at the new atrium in action, WDW News Today reported. It’s very Disney.
Here’s a quick look at the atrium, from Daily Disney Escape:
What does the new Disney atrium at the Kia Center look like?
Picture a big white wall with raised, sculpted versions of Walt Disney World icons, Cinderella Castle among them. Then Tinker Bell flies across it, trailing pixie dust, WDW News Today said.
She waves her wand over the “Walt Disney World” name, and the whole wall lights up with color and movement.
The projections show scenery from all four parks: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Disney says the projection technology will change the space during Magic games and every other event at the arena, too.
“The reimagined Walt Disney World Atrium builds on that partnership,” Walt Disney World president Joe Schott said in the announcement, BlogMickey reported. He said it creates “an experience that feels distinctly Orlando.”
How long is the new Disney and Orlando Magic deal?
Nobody’s saying. Magic president of business operations Charlie Freeman declined to share the length but called it “long-term,” the Sentinel reported.
“We’re really excited about where we’re going, and the fact that Disney’s going to be with us for quite some time is very exciting,” Freeman said.
Sports Business Journal first reported the extension.
How long has Disney sponsored the Orlando Magic?
Since 2010. That’s when Walt Disney World became a “Champions of the Community” sponsor. It added the jersey patch in 2017, BlogMickey said.
The two last extended the deal in 2022, back when the arena was still called the Amway Center. The Disney atrium was already there then, BlogMickey noted, so this is a glow-up of a familiar space.
“As two Orlando-born organizations, this continues our 16-year COTC relationship, putting the community at the heart of what we do,” Freeman said in the announcement.
What did Disney World’s president say?
Joe Schott is a big Magic fan, and he didn’t hide it.
“This is really about creating magical memories that last a lifetime,” Schott said at the Oct. 12 event, the Sentinel reported. Having Disney on a Magic uniform is “the best of both worlds,” he said.
He added that he’s “a huge Magic fan,” so supporting the hometown team makes it even better.
Schott has worked for Disney for more than 40 years. Asked for a favorite memory, he went straight back to the days of Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway.
He’s also keeping up with today’s team. “Paolo (Banchero), Jalen (Suggs), (Desmond) Bane... Just amazing,” he said.
The Magic played their first home preseason game the next night, Oct. 13, against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the Kia Center, the Sentinel noted.
Why do Disney and the Magic fit together?
They grew up in the same town. Late Magic co-founder Pat Williams wrote about it in his book Lead Like Walt, WDW News Today noted.
Williams wrote that he was “attempting to do what Walt had already done many times in his life” when he built the team from scratch.
Disney also tied the deal to Central Florida as a sports and entertainment destination, BlogMickey said. Fans have seen that crossover before. The Magic once revealed a City Edition jersey at The NBA Experience at Disney Springs, with Mickey on hand, BlogMickey noted.
When can you see the Walt Disney World Atrium?
On your next trip to the Kia Center. The projections run during Magic games and other events at the arena, according to the team.
So if you’re catching a game this season, look up before you head to your seat. Tinker Bell might be flying by.
