Disney shared early menu ideas Oct. 6 for Harryhausen’s and Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the two Monsters, Inc. restaurants opening at Hollywood Studios in 2027, and the dishes are still being worked out.
The sushi restaurant from Monsters, Inc. is going to serve ramen with eyeballs in it. Probably.
Disney’s chefs gave a first look at the food for Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, in a Disney Parks Blog post on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The menus belong to two restaurants: Harryhausen’s, a table-service spot, and Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, a quick-service pizza counter.
Disney’s wording was careful, though. The blog calls these dishes “being explored,” so nothing on the menu is locked in yet.
What will Harryhausen’s serve at Disney World?
Ramen, for starters, and Disney says the menu won’t stop at sushi.
The ramen bowls draw on traditional Japanese flavors, with rich tonkotsu broth and alkaline ramen noodles. Then come the monster touches: fishcake sliced to look like eyeballs, and green eggs.
“We’re taking familiar dishes and adding unexpected twists,” said Brian Piasecki, Disney’s director of culinary and concept development.
Harryhausen’s is the swanky restaurant where Mike takes Celia for her birthday in the 2001 movie, right before Boo gets loose and the Child Detection Agency shuts the whole place down. The park version gets the movie’s head sushi chef as a brand-new Audio-Animatronic figure, working the food with eight tentacles in the middle of the dining room.
What is Blort?
A soda from Monsters University that nobody outside the movie has ever tasted, because it didn’t exist.
At Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, Disney’s beverage team is working on a purple frozen version of it, topped with something Disney calls Scream Apple Foam. The blog post floats that idea with a “maybe,” so the final drink could still change.
Archie is the Scare Pig, the six-legged mascot of Fear Tech, the rival school that Monsters University students keep pranking by stealing him. Disney’s pitching the restaurant as the neighborhood pizza joint where monster college kids hang out after class.
Did Disney’s chefs worry the Monstropolis food was too gross?
All the time, apparently. The team says it had to ask itself questions like whether monsters slurp, whether they chew and whether a dish had too many eyeballs.
“There were so many moments where we asked, ‘Is this too much?’” said Evan Rosenthal, Disney’s beverage director.
Sometimes the answer that came back was to take it further. The team’s name for what came out the other end is “grossly fun” food: familiar flavors with monster-sized twists.
What do the Monstropolis restaurants replace?
Harryhausen’s moves into the old Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano building, and Archie’s takes over the former PizzeRizzo, BlogMickey reported.
So Hollywood Studios is swapping one pizza place for another, and trading a rat for a pig.
The whole land sits on what used to be the Muppets Courtyard. The old MuppetVision 3D building becomes the Glob Theater, home to a “Welcome to Monstropolis” pre-show.
When does Monstropolis open at Hollywood Studios?
The first wave opens in 2027. That includes the Glob Theater, both restaurants, the Monsters University Alumni Club seating area and a shop called the Scareporium.
The Monsters, Inc. door vault roller coaster comes later, in 2028. Disney hasn’t announced exact opening dates for either phase.
Has Disney changed anything else in Monstropolis?
A little. On Oct. 5, Disney released updated concept art for the Glob Theater lobby, and WDW News Today spotted two changes.
The chandeliers covered in monster eyes, horns and teeth got swapped for more classic ones. And a movie poster for Silence of the Cribs, a parody of The Silence of the Lambs, got replaced by an ad for a concert by an octopus musician.
Disney didn’t say why. The eyeball ramen survived, though.
