For about a week, cast members at the EPCOT coaster told guests their whole group had to be together past certain points in line. Disney calls it a test, at least for now.
You know the move. One person holds a spot in a long line, and the rest of the family strolls up later, squeezing past everyone else.
At Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Disney just tested a way to stop it.
For about a week, cast members at the EPCOT coaster told guests their entire party had to be together at certain checkpoints in line. Mickey Visit reported the test Friday, Oct. 16, and a Disney official told the site it isn’t a permanent change, at least not yet.
Here’s the full ride, from MondoLens:
How did the Cosmic Rewind line test work?
A cast member stood where guests head from outside into the main building, Mickey Visit said. Their message: no meeting up past this point.
A second cast member repeated the rule inside, by the exit doors just before the switchbacks that lead up into the “exhibit” part of the queue.
If your group wasn’t together by then, latecomers couldn’t walk in to join you. KennythePirate reported the same thing Sunday, Oct. 18, based on guest reports from the past week.
Can you leave the Cosmic Rewind line to use the restroom?
Yes. That was the one exception, according to both sites.
Cast members at the checkpoints were also there to help guests who stepped out find their group again. The queue is long and twisty, so that’s a real help.
Why is Disney cracking down on line cutting at Cosmic Rewind?
Tempers. KennythePirate said the change followed several heated arguments between guests in the queue. In one, Disney security had to step in when two adults got into an altercation before the first preshow room.
Saving spots isn’t technically allowed anywhere at Disney World. The resort’s own rules ask guests not to be “jumping lines or saving places in lines for others” as a courtesy to everyone else.
Still, people do it all the time, and it’s not just at Cosmic Rewind, Mickey Visit noted. Cast members at the checkpoints could also cut down on guests who claim to be meeting someone just to skip ahead.
Is the Cosmic Rewind meet-up rule permanent?
No, not right now. The test wrapped up Oct. 15, Mickey Visit said. A Disney official told the site it had run for the past week and isn’t permanent at this time.
KennythePirate described it as a test that isn’t always in effect. Disney could bring it back, or roll it out for good later, Mickey Visit said.
KennythePirate also wondered whether Disney will try it on other busy rides.
How could the rule affect guests who need help in line?
That’s the big question. Some guests can’t handle a long, traditional queue but don’t qualify for Disney’s Disability Access Service, or DAS.
Those guests are sometimes told to wait outside while their family moves through the line, then join them closer to boarding, KennythePirate said. A strict meet-up rule could make that tricky. Mickey Visit expects Disney would handle those cases one by one.
Disney overhauled DAS in 2024 to cut down on overuse and misuse, and many guests who used to qualify no longer do, Mickey Visit said.
What else has changed in the Cosmic Rewind queue this year?
A lot. The second preshow room has been a problem spot, Mickey Visit said. Guests crowd the doors to be first into the next hallway, then rush through, which can turn into a crowd safety issue.
Disney briefly split that room into sections last spring. More recently, it blocked the middle of three doorways, added stanchions and stationed a cast member with a glow wand to keep the lanes moving.
Earlier this month, Disney also edited the first preshow video. It removed a pause where some guests liked to shout a joke that wasn’t exactly family friendly.
