The Disney Treasure turned back to Florida early in its Sept. 26 sailing so a guest could get medical care on land. The ship then continued its voyage and reached Tortola a few hours late.
The Disney Treasure made an unscheduled trip back to Port Canaveral in late September after a guest had a medical emergency on board, per WDW News Today.
The ship had left Florida on Saturday, Sept. 26, for a seven-night cruise that was scheduled to end Saturday, Oct. 3. The emergency happened early in the trip, and the ship turned around so the guest could get care at a hospital on land.
The guest was treated, later released, and flew home, per WDW News Today, citing comments from people on the sailing.
Why did the Disney Treasure turn around?
Because the guest needed care the ship couldn’t provide.
Cruise ships have medical centers with doctors and nurses on board, but some situations need a hospital. When that happens, the captain can turn back to the nearest port or arrange another way to get the guest ashore.
Disney Cruise Line hasn’t released a public statement about this sailing. No details about the guest have been shared, and we’re not going to speculate about them.
Did the Disney Treasure skip any ports?
No, the order of stops didn’t change.
The detour did cost some time. Arrival in Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, slipped from 7 a.m. to about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The ship’s time in Tortola was shortened, per WDW News Today.
After the guest went ashore, the ship continued the rest of the cruise as planned.
Has this happened on Disney cruises before?
Yes.
In July, the Disney Treasure returned to port for a medical emergency on July 25, and the Disney Wish turned back just hours after leaving Port Canaveral on July 27, per Disney Fanatic. On that Wish sailing, Nassau was dropped and replaced with a second day at sea. Guests who booked Nassau excursions through Disney Cruise Line were expected to get automatic refunds.
Medical returns are standard practice at sea. Cruise lines would rather lose a few hours than put a guest at risk.
What happens to your cruise if the ship turns back?
It depends on how much time is lost.
Sometimes, like this time, the ship just arrives late at the next port. Other times, a stop gets cut and swapped for a sea day, like on the Disney Wish in July.
If a port is canceled, shore excursions booked through Disney Cruise Line are typically refunded, per Disney Fanatic. Excursions booked with outside companies follow those companies’ own rules.
Should you get travel insurance for a Disney cruise?
Many cruisers do, especially for longer sailings.
Your regular health insurance may not cover care at sea or in another country. A travel insurance plan with medical coverage can help with hospital bills or an emergency flight home. Read the plan details before you buy, since coverage varies a lot.
Fellow guests on this sailing were supportive online, per WDW News Today. Most agreed the captain made the right call.
Disney Cruise Line hasn’t announced any changes to upcoming Treasure itineraries.
