Disney turned Soarin' seatbelts into handbags
A new HARVEYS collection at D23 is built from decommissioned restraints pulled off Soarin’ Over California. The clasp on the front is the actual buckle.
The buckle on the front of the purse says Soarin’.
Not a reproduction of it. Disney and HARVEYS built a collection at D23 out of decommissioned seatbelts taken off Soarin’ Over California, and the hardware came with them.
It’s at The Walt Disney Company Store on the show floor, August 14 through 16.
What’s in the HARVEYS Soarin’ collection
Two pieces, based on Disney’s preview image.
A smaller purse with the Soarin’ seatbelt clasp centered on the front, and a strap carrying Mickey in the attraction’s pilot cap alongside the ride’s name. And a small wallet with the same buckle on the front.
Disney has not published a full item list or pricing.
Why a seatbelt handbag is a real collectible
Because the material has a history attached to it.
HARVEYS built its business on seatbelt bags, and Disney collaborations are a regular part of that. What separates this one is provenance. These restraints held people in an attraction that opened at Disney California Adventure in 2001 and has run continuously since.
Every buckle in the collection has been clicked shut by strangers thousands of times. That’s a strange thing to carry a wallet in, and it’s exactly why people will.
Can you get a HARVEYS Soarin’ bag signed
Yes, on Friday.
Dana and Melanie Harvey, who founded HARVEYS, are signing bags at the store on Friday, August 14.
That’s a one-day window, and it’s on the same day the store runs on a virtual queue rather than standby. Anyone wanting a signature needs a boarding group.
How likely is this to sell out
Unclear, and the last one didn’t.
The 2024 event carried a HARVEYS purse for the Haunted Mansion 65th anniversary, and MickeyVisit reported stock stayed available through that weekend. Whether a limited-material collection behaves the same way is a different question, since decommissioned seatbelts are a finite supply in a way that printed canvas is not.
Disney says all merchandise is subject to availability. On this one, the phrase means something.
