The two resorts run on different rules, and the gap got wider in January. The biggest one: your Disneyland hotel no longer gets you into the park early, while your Disney World hotel still does.
You know Walt Disney World. You know the rope drop plan, the whole routine.
Then you book Disneyland and half of it stops working.
Disneyland hotels no longer get you in early
This is the big one, and it is the one that wrecks a Disney World veteran’s morning.
On Jan. 5, 2026, Disneyland ended Early Theme Park Entry for guests at the Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Pixar Place Hotel. The 30-minute head start is gone.
In its place, hotel guests now get one complimentary Lightning Lane entry. Not one per day. One per guest, for the entire stay, good at a single Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction.
Disneyland’s stated reason was that most hotel guests were not using Early Entry, and that the designated early park often did not match where people had a park reservation.
Walt Disney World still has Early Entry. Thirty minutes, all four parks, every single morning of your resort stay. (For now)
So a Disney World regular books the Grand Californian, plans a Fantasyland sweep before opening, and finds out at the gate that they are in the same crowd as everybody else. Show up 45 minutes before opening instead and you at least get a good spot at the rope.
Rise of the Resistance is not covered by the free perk
The complimentary Lightning Lane only works on Multi Pass attractions. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers are Single Pass rides at Disneyland, which means they are not eligible.
The two rides you would most want to skip the line for are the two the free perk cannot touch.
Book the perk at check-in, or from 7 a.m. on your arrival day if you complete online check-in beforehand.
Disney Vacation Club counts, Good Neighbor hotels do not
DVC reservations at Disneyland Resort hotels qualify for the Lightning Lane perk. Stays at Good Neighbor hotels, the nearby non-Disney properties Disney partners with, do not.
Good Neighbor hotels are frequently a better deal and some sit closer to the gate than the Disney hotels do. They simply come with none of the on-site benefits, which is a tradeoff Disney World guests are less used to weighing, since almost nothing off-property near Orlando carries Disney perks anyway.
Pixar Place lost its private entrance
If you stayed at Pixar Place before and remember walking straight into Disney California Adventure through a private gate, that gate is closed.
It shut permanently in early 2026. All on-site guests now enter DCA through the Grand Californian entrance.
Everything is closer than you think, and that is its own problem
The geography flip is the mistake nobody warns you about.
At Disney World, travel time is the enemy. You budget an hour to get anywhere, and you plan a day around a single park.
At Disneyland, the two park entrances face each other across a plaza. You can park hop in four minutes, and both parks fit inside an area smaller than the Magic Kingdom parking lot.
The trap is that people over-plan anyway. Disney World habits produce a rigid, hour-by-hour Disneyland itinerary for a resort that rewards wandering. You do not need a strategy to cross the esplanade. You need shoes.
One last thing. Disneyland runs on Pacific time and your phone will handle that fine, but your body will not, and a 7 a.m. Lightning Lane booking window hits a lot harder on the third morning.
