A flood watch covers Orlando and the Disney World area through Monday evening, with more heavy rain on the way after 6 to 10 inches soaked parts of Brevard County overnight.
Pack the poncho. Then pack a second one, because the first one is going to lose.
A flood watch covers the Walt Disney World area on Monday, Nov. 2, as bands of heavy rain keep rolling across Central Florida. The National Weather Service office in Melbourne put the watch up Sunday night, and by Monday morning FOX 35 and News 6 listed it as running through 7 p.m. Monday for all of east Central Florida.
That includes Orange and Osceola counties, which is where all four Disney World theme parks, the water parks, Disney Springs and the Disney resort hotels sit.
How much rain is Orlando getting from the flood watch?
News 6 says another 1 to 3 inches could fall Monday, with a few spots getting up to 5 inches. The ground is already soaked from recent storms, so there’s not much room left for the water to go.
Sunday night’s forecast from WDWMagic put some totals at 5 to 7 inches or more. Some places have already beaten that. Florida Today reported that 6 to 10 inches fell overnight in parts of south Brevard County.
The watch covers Orange, Osceola, Seminole, northern and southern Lake, and inland and coastal Volusia counties. Brevard got hit hardest overnight, with two flash flood warnings Monday morning, according to FOX 35.
Here’s what a soggy day on Main Street U.S.A. looks like, from ResortTV1:
Is Disney World open during the flood watch?
Yes. MickeyBlog reported Sunday night that theme park operations had not been affected. We didn’t find any Disney announcement of closures as of Monday morning.
That doesn’t mean everything runs all day. Outdoor rides pause when lightning gets close, and WDWMagic warned that some storms could bring gusts of 40 to 45 mph. Water park fans may want to sit this one out. MickeyBlog said Monday “may not be the best morning” for Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach.
Your best bet is the My Disney Experience app. It shows ride status and park hours, and it updates faster than any of us can.
What’s flooding in Brevard County and the Space Coast?
Brevard Public Schools canceled classes Monday because of the flooding. “The safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority,” the district said, per FOX 35.
Florida Today reported that some Titusville streets were impassable and that Palm Bay saw flooding on Jupiter Boulevard and Elmont Street. Ocean Boulevard in Satellite Beach flooded too, and police asked people to stay off the roads.
FOX 35 also listed a high surf advisory through 7 p.m., with breakers of 5 to 7 feet, plus coastal flood advisories through Tuesday evening. Port Canaveral sits right in Brevard. We didn’t find any reports of cruise changes there as of Monday morning, but anyone sailing this week should keep an eye on their cruise line’s app and email.
Tips for a rainy Disney World day
WDWMagic’s list is short and sensible:
Give yourself extra time to get between parks and resorts, especially if you’re driving.
Never drive through standing water.
Bring ponchos and waterproof bags for phones and park tickets.
Expect outdoor rides to stop when lightning is nearby.
A few of our own. Indoor shows and dark rides tend to get slammed the minute the sky opens up, so ride the outdoor stuff in the dry gaps. Also, the gift shops will happily sell you a poncho. They will not be selling it cheap.
When will the rain stop in Orlando?
Later this week. News 6 says rain chances drop to 40 to 50 percent for Election Day on Tuesday and about 30 percent Wednesday. Thursday into the weekend looks much better, with rain chances of 20 percent or less and highs in the low to mid 80s.
That timing works out nicely for the holidays. Jollywood Nights opens at Hollywood Studios on Saturday, Nov. 7. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and the Frozen Holiday Surprise at Cinderella Castle both start Sunday, Nov. 8.
The catch? News 6 says another cold front could show up around next Monday, Nov. 9, with more showers and storms. Some of the coolest air of the season might follow it, though forecasters aren’t sure about the timing yet.
So, if you’re at Disney World this week, think of Monday as the day for indoor rides, long lunches and that table service meal you’ve been meaning to book. Save the outdoor coasters for the weekend.
