Disney World’s 55-year-old Electrical Water Pageant is glowing brighter on Seven Seas Lagoon, as fan videos show new LED lighting on the floats. Some guests love it, some miss the old bulbs.
Disney World’s Electrical Water Pageant looks a little different this fall. Fans say the old floating light show on Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake is now running on LED lights.
On Halloween night, X user @mastromjm posted in all caps that the pageant is now LED and looks great. By Sunday morning, the post had more than 580 likes and about 24,000 views.
It wasn’t the first sign. YouTube channel Florida Parks After Dark posted a video on Oct. 22 titled “Disney’s Electrical Water Pageant With NEW LED Lighting.”
Disney hasn’t announced the change, and we couldn’t find a Disney Parks Blog post or a statement about it. So for now, this comes from guests who watched it from the beach.
Here’s that Oct. 22 video from Florida Parks After Dark:
What is the Electrical Water Pageant at Disney World?
It’s a nightly parade of 14 lighted floats that glide across Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake after dark. The floats are outlined in lights and shaped like sea serpents, dolphins, sea horses, a crocodile and even a dinosaur.
The show debuted in October 1971, the same month Walt Disney World opened. That makes it one of the oldest shows still running at the resort. It turned 55 this fall.
The floats in use today date back to 1977. Back in 1974, a newspaper article said the pageant used more than 50,000 bulbs, with a few hundred swapped out every week, as AllEars reported.
Do people like the new LED lights on the Electrical Water Pageant?
Plenty of them do. The Halloween post drew hundreds of likes, and the colors look sharper and brighter in fan clips.
Others really don’t. “I hate LEDs that replace warm, charming, classic things,” X user @TangaroaJoel wrote on Oct. 31.
It’s the same fight Disney fans have every time an old show gets touched. LEDs last longer and use less power, but some folks miss the softer glow of the old bulbs. Classic Disney fan stuff.
Where can you watch the Electrical Water Pageant?
You can catch it for free from the beaches at several Magic Kingdom area hotels. You don’t need a park ticket.
Disney’s official page lists these viewing spots:
Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground
Disney’s Contemporary Resort
What time does the Electrical Water Pageant start?
Disney’s page lists the show between 8:35 and 10:05 p.m., with about 15 minutes at each stop. AllEars’ rough schedule puts it near the Polynesian around 9 p.m., the Grand Floridian around 9:15, Wilderness Lodge around 9:35, Fort Wilderness around 9:45 and the Contemporary around 10:05.
Times shift with the fireworks schedule, so check the My Disney Experience app the day you go. Bad weather can cancel it, too, and there’s rain in the Orlando forecast this week, so have a backup night.
Has the Electrical Water Pageant changed before?
Plenty of times. The show paused in 2020 when Disney World closed and came back in December 2020.
For the resort’s 50th anniversary in 2021, Disney added new light-up segments and a “The Magic is Calling” opening, according to BlogMickey.
In December 2022, five of the 14 floats were pulled for repairs, WDWNT reported, including the dolphins, the dinosaur and Neptune. They came back early.
The music has changed over the years, too. The current soundtrack dates to 1996 and mixes Disney songs like “Under the Sea” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” with a patriotic finale.
Is Disney confirming the Electrical Water Pageant LED change?
Disney hasn’t said a word so far. We checked the Disney Parks Blog and the official show page and found nothing about new lights. If Disney says something, we’ll update.
Until then, the best proof is the floats themselves. If you’re staying at a Magic Kingdom resort, walk down to the beach around 9 and judge the glow for yourself. Bring bug spray.
