Disneyland's new Nov. 3 pins went only to Pin Traders in Downtown Disney, with none on in-park shelves. That flips a 2019 rule that kept new limited pins inside the gates, and nobody will say if it sticks.
Disneyland guests who paid for a park ticket Tuesday couldn't buy the new pins inside the park. Everything in the Nov. 3 release went through a virtual queue at Disney's Pin Traders in Downtown Disney District, which doesn't need a ticket at all.
The star of the day, the monthly Kingdom Hearts pin, sold out just after 10 a.m., WDW News Today reported. Disney was calling boarding groups 41 to 46 at the time.
The funny part? In July 2019, Disneyland pulled new limited edition pins out of Downtown Disney and sold them only inside the parks. A Bakersfield TV station's headline put it bluntly: "If you want new Disney pins, you'll have to buy a ticket." This week it went the other way.
WDW News Today checked the usual in-park pin shops Tuesday and found none of the new pins. They weren't sold out. They just never showed up.
A Cast Member at Westward Ho Trading Company said the store got no new pin inventory for the day. They expected "leftovers" from Pin Traders on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Are Disneyland Pin Tuesday sales moving outside the parks for good?
Nobody official has said so. Disney hasn't announced a permanent change.
Cast Members told WDW News Today they expect the next Pin Tuesday to go back to normal, but they couldn't confirm it. They also couldn't say whether December will work the same way.
Even the staff wasn't on the same page. A Pin Traders Cast Member said only the Kingdom Hearts pin was supposed to be exclusive to Downtown Disney. The other new pins, they said, should have been sold elsewhere without a queue.
Normally, new pins also land at these in-park shops:
Disneyland: 20th Century Music Company, Westward Ho Trading Company and TomorrowLanding
Disney California Adventure: Julius Katz & Sons, Radiator Springs Curios and Humphrey's Service & Supplies
How did the Disneyland pin virtual queue work?
Disneyland's Merchandise Events page laid out the rules ahead of time, Laughing Place reported. We covered the announcement Oct. 29.
When: The queue opened at 5 a.m. Pacific in the Disneyland app.
Who: Guests had to be within 60 miles of Downtown Disney District.
Limits: One join per person, on your own My Disney account. No joining as a party.
The wait: When your boarding group was called, the app pinged you to head to Pin Traders.
Inside: Guests checked in at a "Virtual Queue Return Here" sign, waited in a taped-off line, then paid at tables.
There was no standby line while the virtual queue ran. And the virtual part didn't stop people from showing up in person. Hundreds of guests still waited outside Pin Traders for their groups to be called, WDW News Today reported.
Why did Disneyland use a virtual queue for pins?
Disney didn't give a reason. Demand is the obvious one. Laughing Place noted the first Kingdom Hearts pin of the year, from January, resells for about $250 or more. The new one retails for $24.99.
Disney also used a virtual queue for the Lorcana Hyperia City release in October, at both Downtown Disney and Disney Springs.
The Kingdom Hearts series is No. 11 of 12 for the year, so there's one more in December. WDW News Today expects that one to use a virtual queue, too.
What Disneyland pins come out in November 2026?
Pin Tuesday rolls on three more times this month. Here are the highlights from WDW News Today's list:
Nov. 10: Moana 10th anniversary pins, including an LE 2000 mini jumbo for $54.99, plus Ariel, Stitch, Marie and Maleficent pins (LE 5000, $24.99 each) and a six-pin box set for $140.
Nov. 17: "it's a small world" holiday pins, starting at $21.99, plus Encanto 5th anniversary, Happy Hanukkah and a Storytellers Cafe pin.
Nov. 24: Walt Disney Day, a Candlelight Processional pin (LE 3000) and the next Icons of the Galaxy quarterly pin.
Disney hasn't said where those will be sold or whether any of them get a virtual queue. Check Disneyland's Merchandise Events page the week before.
What did Tuesday's Disneyland pin release include?
A holiday-heavy batch. Besides Kingdom Hearts (LE 4000), there was a Life Day pin (LE 3000), an Ornament and Pin set (LE 2000, $49.99), a Christmas Countdown pin and a Happy Thanksgiving pin.
So if you wanted a turkey pin, you needed a boarding group.
