The last two ticket booths on the east side of Disneyland’s Esplanade are gone, cleared for a pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard to a new 6,000-space parking garage.
The east side of the Disneyland Resort entrance plaza looks a lot emptier this week. Crews have torn down the last two ticket booths on the east end of the Esplanade, near the bus loop.
The Esplanade is the plaza between the gates of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, which opened in February 2001. Construction walls now line both sides of it, WDW News Today reported.
WDW News Today posted photos of the cleared spot on Monday, Oct. 12, taken from the Disneyland Monorail, and Disney Dining reported the demolition the next day.
That makes six east-side booths gone. Four others came down earlier, starting in August.
Why is Disneyland tearing down ticket booths?
To make room for a bridge. The cleared land is set to hold a new pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard. It will connect the Esplanade to a new parking garage and transportation hub, WDW News Today reported.
Right now, guests walking in from the hotels across Harbor Boulevard cross the street at ground level. The bridge would put them over the traffic instead.
It’s all part of DisneylandForward, the long-range plan the Anaheim City Council approved in a final vote on May 7, 2024. It lets Disney build theme park attractions on land it already owns. The city’s summary of the plan even mentions new parking east of the parks and possible footbridges over Harbor Boulevard.
Under the deal, Disney committed to spend at least $1.9 billion in Anaheim over 10 years, according to the city.
The first four booths came down in August. Permit filings called for pulling out their deep foundations, capping the utilities and grading the ground, TAMPAcrit reported, citing records found by Theme Park IQ.
Each of those booths covered about 700 square feet, and most of the work happened overnight. Resort representatives told TAMPAcrit that guests would be routed around the barricades.
Where can you buy Disneyland tickets at the gate now?
On the west side. The two remaining ticket booths on the west end of the Esplanade are still open, and so is Guest Services, Disney Dining reported.
Disney Dining pointed to digital tickets and online planning as the reason walk-up windows matter less than they used to. Disney hasn’t said whether more booths will go.
What will the new Disneyland parking garage have?
A lot of spaces. Disney broke ground in August on the structure, which is going up on the current Manchester Cast Member lot. Here’s what the plans call for, according to WDW News Today and Disney Dining:
About 6,000 parking spaces
316 electric vehicle charging spaces
A dedicated area for shuttles and rideshares
A security office
Direct access from Disney Way
Disney’s updated concept art shows a roof over the pedestrian bridge, but that design could still change. Disney hasn’t given an opening date for the garage or the bridge.
A revised permit filed with Anaheim trims the garage from eight floors to seven and shrinks it by about 4%, to 3.1 million square feet, WDW News Today reported on Oct. 14. Disney still says it will hold more than 6,000 spaces.
Disneyland’s two current parking garages, Mickey and Friends and Pixar Pals, are both on the west side of the resort, near Disneyland Drive.
Is the Disneyland security entrance moving?
It looks like it. The walkway from the current east-side security screening area now curves around the construction walls. Scott Gustin, who covers the parks, said the east-side screening area will move into this spot once construction wraps, WDW News Today reported.
The booth site has also been merged with the neighboring work zone for a new Porto’s Bakery in the Downtown Disney District, Disney Dining reported. An interior wall keeps the two sites apart.
What is DisneylandForward building?
The garage is part of the groundwork for some big projects Disney has announced, including new rides in Avengers Campus, a Coco ride on Pixar Pier and an Avatar area at Disney California Adventure, Disney Dining noted. A reimagined Tomorrowland at Disneyland, announced at the D23 Expo this year, is on that list, too.
For now, the east side of the Esplanade is a construction zone. Anyone coming in from Harbor Boulevard who still needs a ticket will want to cut over to the west booths before getting in line.
