Disneyland’s Mad Tea Party has been closed for a refurbishment since Sept. 14. The spinning teacups now reopen Oct. 16, about 10 days earlier than Disneyland’s calendar first showed.
The teacups are almost ready to spin again.
Mad Tea Party, the spinning teacup ride in Fantasyland at Disneyland, is set to reopen on Oct. 16, WDW News Today and MickeyVisit reported. The Disneyland app shows the refurbishment ending Oct. 15.
That’s good news if you’ve got a trip coming up. When the ride closed last month, Disneyland’s website listed it as closed through Oct. 26.
When did Mad Tea Party close at Disneyland?
It closed on Monday, Sept. 14, for a refurbishment. Disneyland never made a big announcement about it. Fans spotted it in August when the ride’s operating hours disappeared from Disneyland’s website starting Sept. 14, WDW News Today reported.
Disney put up construction walls styled to match Fantasyland’s medieval look, with flat cutouts of the ride’s colorful lanterns. Signs on the walls point guests to other rides nearby.
Why was Mad Tea Party closed?
Disney didn’t share details. Refurbishments like this usually mean routine maintenance, fresh paint and a general tune-up.
The good news is that the work appears to be wrapping up early. Refurbishment dates can still change, though, so check the Disneyland app before you go.
How old is Mad Tea Party?
It’s one of Disneyland’s originals. Mad Tea Party opened with the park on July 17, 1955, which makes it more than 71 years old.
The ride is based on the tea party scene from Disney’s 1951 movie “Alice in Wonderland.” Riders climb into giant teacups on a spinning platform, and a wheel in the middle of each cup lets you spin yourself faster.
Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World has its own Mad Tea Party, which opened with that park in 1971. Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland have teacup rides too.
How do you make the teacups spin faster?
Turn the wheel in the center of your cup. The harder and faster everyone turns it, the faster your cup spins.
Want a calmer ride? Leave the wheel alone and let the platform do the work.
If you’re riding with kids, it’s smart to agree on a speed before the music starts. Nobody wants a surprise dizzy spell.
What else is closed at Disneyland right now?
A few other things, according to MickeyVisit:
Indiana Jones Adventure has been closed for refurbishment since Sept. 8, and Disneyland hasn’t announced a reopening date.
Tomorrowland Skyline Terrace has been closed since Sept. 11.
The Disney Vacation Club lounge in Tomorrowland has been closed since July 27, with a temporary lounge in the Starcade.
Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island was also set to close starting Sept. 14 for a short refurbishment, WDW News Today reported back in August.
What holiday changes are coming to Disneyland?
Plenty. Haunted Mansion Holiday, the Nightmare Before Christmas version of the Haunted Mansion, is back for the season.
Disneyland also confirmed that “it’s a small world” Holiday and the Cars Land holiday overlays, Mater’s Jingle Jamboree and Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl, are returning in 2026.
So by the time the holidays roll around, Fantasyland should have its teacups spinning again and a whole lot of twinkle lights next door.
What rides are near Mad Tea Party at Disneyland?
The teacups sit right next to the Alice in Wonderland dark ride, so you can do both back to back. The ride opened in 1958 and sends you through Wonderland in a giant caterpillar.
Matterhorn Bobsleds is just a few steps away too. That makes this corner of Fantasyland a good stop if your group wants one spinny ride, one gentle ride and one coaster in a row.
