Walt Disney World has confirmed that “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire will play on repeat for every ride at the EPCOT coaster that day.
Why does Cosmic Rewind play “September” on Sept. 21?
Because of one line in a 1978 song.
“Do you remember, the 21st night of September” opens the track, and the internet decided years ago that the date belongs to it. Sept. 21 gets treated as an unofficial holiday, complete with the annual wave of memes.
“September” is one of six songs in the ride’s soundtrack, along with “One Way or Another” by Blondie, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears, “Conga” by Miami Sound Machine, “I Ran (So Far Away)” by A Flock of Seagulls, and “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps.
Among the fan base, “September” is widely considered the best draw of the six. Disney figured that out and turned it into a tradition.
How long has Disney been doing this?
The one-day switch has run for several years now. 2024 appears to be the first time Disney formally announced it in advance rather than just quietly doing it, which is why some outlets describe that year as the start.
By 2025 it had become a real event. Park reservations filled up on Sept. 21 that year.
Will Cosmic Rewind be busy on Sept. 21?
Almost certainly.
In 2025, Sept. 21 fell on a Sunday. Florida locals and annual passholders were off work, and demand reflected it.
In 2026, Sept. 21 is a Monday.
A Monday cuts into the local day-trip audience that turns a fun gimmick into a capacity problem. It should still be a heavier-than-normal day at the attraction, just not the same kind of heavy.
Cosmic Rewind has also been running as one of EPCOT’s highest-wait attractions through 2026, so the baseline was never low.
How to ride Cosmic Rewind on Sept. 21
Same options as any other day at EPCOT.
Lightning Lane remains the reliable route if you want a guaranteed window. Standby availability varies by day and by crowd, and the ride’s queue situation has shifted since it opened in May 2022, when it ran on a virtual queue only.
The practical advice is boring and correct. Go early, or buy your way past the line, or accept that you are waiting on the one day a year everybody wants the same song.
