Tim Federle’s teen witch series Coven Academy was Disney+’s most-watched title over its launch weekend, and its perfect critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes comes from seven reviews so far.
Disney’s witches had a good first weekend.
Coven Academy, the new teen fantasy series from Tim Federle, was the No. 1 title on Disney+ over its launch weekend, according to Laughing Place. It premiered on Freeform on Thursday, Oct. 1, then hit Disney+ and Hulu the next day.
Critics like it too. As of Monday, Oct. 5, it holds a 100 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What is Coven Academy about?
Three teenage witches at an elite magic boarding school in New Orleans, plus their “dangerously charming” warlock classmates, as Disney+ puts it.
There’s friendship, grief, secrets and forbidden love. There are also ancient forces threatening the city, because a witch school without a looming threat would just be a regular school with better outfits.
Federle is the creator of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, so he knows his way around a Disney teen ensemble. He also wrote the book Better Nate Than Ever and directed its Disney+ movie version in 2022.

Is Coven Academy really 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes?
It is, with a catch. That perfect score comes from seven critics’ reviews so far.
Seven for seven is still a clean sweep. But one or two mixed reviews would move that number fast.
The audience score is 81 percent, from fewer than 50 ratings. Both numbers will probably shift as more people watch.
How many episodes of Coven Academy are there?
Disney calls them chapters, and there are 21 of them. Each runs roughly 10 to 22 minutes.
That’s an unusual format. It’s longer than a microdrama clip but shorter than a typical half-hour show, which makes it easy to say “just one more.”
All 21 chapters are streaming on Disney+ and Hulu now.
Who is in the Coven Academy cast?
The students:
Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar
Jordan Leftwich as Sasha
Ora Duplass as Tegan
Malachi Barton as Jake
Louis Thresher as Ollie
The grown-ups are where ‘90s kids will light up. Tiffani Thiessen, of Saved by the Bell, plays Miss Graves, and Devon Sawa, of Casper, plays Mr. Cole.
Barton is already a familiar Disney Channel face from The Villains of Valley View.
Where can you watch Coven Academy?
In the U.S., it streams on Disney+ and Hulu. Freeform airs it too.
It’s rated TV-PG, so it’s aimed at teens and up, with a little more bite than a typical Disney Channel show.
Is there a Coven Academy display at Disneyland?
There is, or at least there was. In September, Disney dressed up the Hollywood Backlot city set in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure with Coven Academy posters, near the Hyperion Theater, Laughing Place reported.
That set is where Disney often promotes its new shows and movies. Disney didn’t post an end date, so if you’re at the resort this month, take a quick detour and see if it’s still up.
Is Coven Academy good for Halloween?
The timing works. Witches, New Orleans, and an Oct. 1 premiere add up to a Halloween binge.
And with chapters that short, you could knock out the whole season in a weekend without trying very hard.
