Disney's Gargoyles revival happening? What Brent Spiner actually said
A voice actor from the original series told his podcast that he’d been informed a new animated Gargoyles is happening. Disney has announced nothing, the show’s creator hasn’t commented, and outlets are already calling it official.
Somebody at Disney may have told a Gargoyles voice actor that a new animated series is happening. That is the entire story, and it’s worth being precise about it.
On Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny, the podcast hosted by Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes, the news came out sideways during a conversation about the franchise.
“I was told this morning. It’s another animated series,“ Spiner said, per ComicBook.com, clarifying that he meant animation rather than the long-delayed live-action project.
Spiner voiced Puck in the original series. Frakes voiced David Xanatos. Both are original cast, neither is a Disney executive, and Disney has said nothing.
The outlets can’t agree on who said it
Here’s a wrinkle in the coverage that’s worth knowing before anyone treats this as settled.
ComicBook.com and Bleeding Cool both put the news in Spiner’s mouth, with Frakes reacting to it. CBR attributes the line to Frakes instead, under a headline saying Disney has officially revived the franchise.
Same podcast, same episode, two different speakers, and one of those two write-ups is wrong. We have not heard the episode ourselves, so we’re attributing it the way the majority of the coverage does and flagging that the record isn’t clean.
Nothing about a voice actor’s secondhand morning phone call is official, whatever a headline says.
The live-action Gargoyles series is still in development
There is a real Gargoyles project at Disney, and it isn’t this one.
A live-action series from writer Gary Dauberman and James Wan‘s Atomic Monster was announced for Disney+ in October 2023. Dauberman was set to write, executive produce, and run it.
That’s approaching three years this October with nothing on screen. Spiner’s clarification that he meant an animated series is specifically a way of saying he isn’t talking about that one.
Dauberman has talked publicly about wanting to match the original’s darker, serialized, operatic register. He said as much to Variety in 2025 while promoting a different film, which is roughly where that project’s news cycle has lived since.
Greg Weisman is the person who would actually know
Greg Weisman created Gargoyles and ran the original series, which aired from 1994 to 1997 as part of the Disney Afternoon block.
He has spent years openly campaigning for a revival. He told Polygon he has a 315-page timeline for the show and notebooks full of unused ideas, and that nothing would make him happier than making more of it.
He also doesn’t own it and has said he earns nothing from it streaming on Disney+.
Weisman has not commented on Spiner’s remark. Given how vocally he has wanted exactly this for a decade, his silence is the most interesting thing in the story.
What Gargoyles fans actually have right now
There is new Gargoyles on shelves this month, and it’s a comic.
Weisman launched a new ongoing series at Dynamite Entertainment in August 2026, set in 1997, drawn by Gerardo Gambone. He’s described it as a story thirty years in the making and pitched it as a jumping-on point for people who’ve never read one.
That’s the confirmed thing. The animated series is a report from an actor who was told something on a Tuesday morning.
What would make it real is a Disney announcement, a Weisman confirmation, or a trade with a named reporter on it. None of those exist yet, and the franchise has been here before.
