Debby Ryan lost six months of her life to a brain injury, and almost nobody watching her career knew it was happening.
The 33-year-old actress laid it out on Sept. 15 during an episode of Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, the YouTube series where host Josh Scherer cooks a guest the meal they’d pick as their final one. Somewhere in the middle of that, Ryan described what she called “a pretty crazy, life-altering brain injury a few years ago.” She said she was “out of commission for like six months.”

Ryan said she has had five concussions. Four came from separate incidents. The fifth is the one that changed things, and she described it as sustained shaking that ran for more than a minute.
She never said what caused any of them. That part stayed out of the conversation, and none of the outlets covering her remarks have been able to fill it in either.
What she did spell out was the aftermath. Six months gone. Neurological rehab. A recovery that got her most of the way back and then stopped.
“Some things just did not come back,” she said.

The bigger daily problem is input. “Quite often the world is really loud,” she said. “It’s really too bright.”
She also said she closes her eyes to think clearly, because of how much visual information she’s absorbing at once. Her explanation: “The visual data that I’m taking in can be so distracting and so loud.”
Ryan splits her life into before and after
The line that stuck with people was how she categorizes herself now. Ryan talks about pre-incident Debby and post-incident Debby, two separate people with the injury sitting in between them.
She gave credit to the people who stayed through it, including her husband, Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun. Ryan said they held space for the possibility that the change was permanent, which is a different kind of support than cheering for a full recovery.
Why she told the story on a cooking show
This wasn’t an awards-season profile or a health magazine sit-down. It was a food channel from Rhett & Link’s Mythical Entertainment, and the format is a comedy bit about last meals.
Disclosures like this usually arrive on a schedule, with a publicist and a release window attached. Ryan’s showed up between courses on a YouTube show, years after the fact, because the conversation happened to go there.

For a whole generation, Ryan is Bailey Pickett from The Suite Life on Deck, which ran from 2008 to 2011. Then she carried Jessie as the title character for four seasons and 98 episodes, from 2011 to 2015.
She also headlined two Disney Channel Original Movies, 16 Wishes in 2010 and Radio Rebel in 2012.
The credit people forget is behind the camera. Ryan directed the Jessie episode “Coffee Talk” at 21, which made her the youngest woman to direct a Disney Channel project.

Ryan plays Lindsay in The Sun Never Sets, Joe Swanberg‘s relationship drama with Dakota Fanning, Jake Johnson and Cory Michael Smith. It premiered at South by Southwest on March 13, opened in limited release Aug. 28 and went wide Sept. 4.
Her post-Disney run includes the Netflix series Insatiable, the 2021 thriller Night Teeth, 2022’s Spin Me Round, 2023’s Shortcomings and a cameo as herself in Fast X.
