The last walls are gone from The Little Mermaid ride at Disney California Adventure, and King Triton came out metallic gray with a bright copper trident. Over at the Disneyland Hotel, Tinker Bell is back on the Sorcerer's Hat after about three years.
The Little Mermaid's home at Disney California Adventure is fully unwrapped, and King Triton got a makeover.
All scaffolding and construction walls are gone from The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure, WDWNT reported Wednesday, Nov. 4. The project took about three months.
The biggest change sits on the roofline. The King Triton statue and his trident used to share the same patina color. Now Triton is metallic gray, and his trident is bright, shiny copper, WDWNT reported.
The paint is fresh, too. The light blue now fades toward the top of the wave. The building's architecture didn't change.
That's news since last week. When WDWNT checked on Oct. 27, most of the scaffolding was gone, but it saw no apparent design changes, as we reported. Walls still stood near the entrance then. Triton was apparently saving his reveal.
The ride never closed. It stayed open the whole time the building was wrapped.
Here's a ride-through of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure:
How long was the Little Mermaid ride wrapped at California Adventure?
About three months. Here's how it went, per WDWNT's photo reports:
Aug. 8: Construction walls and scaffolding with black scrims were up on the building's right side for an exterior repaint. Guests kept riding.
Oct. 27 and 28: The scrims and most of the scaffolding came down. Walls stayed near the entrance, and scaffolding still crossed the covered outdoor queue.
Nov. 4: WDWNT reported everything gone.
Disney never announced the project or an end date.
Is the Little Mermaid ride open at Disney California Adventure?
Yes. Disneyland's website shows no refurbishment notice for it.
The ride has no height requirement. You board a clam-mobile for about six and a half minutes of "Under the Sea" and friends. Disney also wants you to know "there is no actual water." Your hair is safe.
A few other Disneyland Resort closures to plan around this month:
Redwood Creek Challenge Trail at DCA is closed through Nov. 12, Disney Tourist Blog reported.
"it's a small world" at Disneyland reopens with its holiday overlay Nov. 13.
Space Mountain is scheduled to close for one day, Nov. 10.
Why does the Little Mermaid ride building look like that?
Because it used to be something else. The building opened with Disney California Adventure on Feb. 8, 2001, as the theater for Golden Dreams, a history-of-California film starring Whoopi Goldberg as Calafia, the spirit of California.
The facade is a replica of Bernard Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition.
Golden Dreams had its last public showing on Sept. 7, 2008. Disney tore down the theater, kept the facade and added Little Mermaid touches, including Triton up top. The ride opened June 3, 2011. Magic Kingdom's version, Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, followed on Dec. 6, 2012.
What changed on the Sorcerer's Hat at the Disneyland Hotel?
Tinker Bell came home. WDWNT reported Wednesday, Nov. 4, that the Tink figure is back on the Sorcerer's Hat sculpture at the Disneyland Hotel.
She sits on the silver ribbon of stars wrapped around the hat, just right of the center crest, pointing her wand at arriving guests. WDWNT said she'd been "conspicuously absent" since the Sorcerer's Hat path reopened in 2023. That's about three years, by our count. Disney didn't say why she left.
The crest is new, too. In August, a round "DLH" monogram replaced the old Disneyland Hotel logo medallion, which had a partial Sleeping Beauty Castle silhouette, WDWNT reported.
The hat stands over the path at the hotel's northeast corner, between Downtown Disney and the hotel grounds. It lights up after dark.
A shinier trident, a returning pixie and a brand-new monogram. Not a bad week for Disneyland's sparkly bits.
