Phill Lewis says The Suite Life of Zack & Cody stitched together bonus episodes one scene a week. Dylan Sprouse says his only Suite Life residual check was for five cents.
Phill Lewis, who played hotel manager Mr. Moseby on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, claims the Disney Channel show pieced together extra episodes one scene at a time, and the cast didn't get paid for them.
Lewis made the claim on the Nov. 3 episode of Wildmen, the podcast hosted by his former on-screen troublemaker Dylan Sprouse and Brendan Columbus. Sprouse then added a pay story of his own. His only Suite Life residual check, he said, was for five cents.
Disney hasn't responded. Entertainment Weekly and E! News both reached out and hadn't heard back when their stories ran.
One wrinkle in the nickel story: Sprouse said it came from "a crossover episode with Hannah Montana." Suite Life actually did two of those, a 2006 team-up with That's So Raven and Hannah Montana and a 2009 Suite Life on Deck special with Wizards of Waverly Place. He didn't say which one paid out.
What are Suite Life wraparound episodes?
Lewis brought them up while he and Sprouse tried to count how many episodes they made. "Remember wraparound episodes?" he asked. Sprouse said he did.
Here's how Lewis described it. The cast would shoot that week's episode. Then production would ask for one scene from an episode set to film a couple of weeks later. The next week, another scene from that same episode.
"They were compiling an episode by shooting a scene a week," Lewis said. Columbus asked if that meant they built a brand-new episode. "Exactly," Lewis answered.
So did the cast get paid for that extra episode? "Not for residuals," Lewis said. "We didn't get paid for [that episode]."
What does 'bumps' mean in the Suite Life pay claims?
Lewis also described what E! called a "bizarre contract." He said it let production shoot as many episodes as it could in a calendar year and count all of them as one season.
"One season, we shot 30 episodes of television," Lewis said. "They called it one season because they didn't have to pay us bumps."
In TV deals, bumps usually means the raises actors get when a new season starts. Fewer seasons on paper would mean fewer raises.
Season 2 of Zack & Cody did run long. It aired 39 episodes between February 2006 and June 2007, which EW also pointed out.
What did Dylan Sprouse say about Suite Life residuals?
Residuals are the payments actors get when a show reruns or gets sold somewhere new. Sprouse says the Hannah Montana crossover check was it. "I'm not joking," he said, The A.V. Club reported.
He called it "not a single paycheck for being arguably one of the most popular shows." And he said that came at a time when residuals "would have been great."
Lewis said the show aired "four or five times a night" because kids kept rewatching it. Sprouse said it was translated into 80 languages, and he claimed it beat The Sopranos in the ratings during its run.
How many Suite Life episodes are there?
Lewis estimated about 190 episodes across both shows. The official episode lists come in a bit lower:
The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: 87 episodes over three seasons, March 2005 to September 2008
The Suite Life on Deck: 71 episodes over three seasons, September 2008 to May 2011
The Suite Life Movie: one Disney Channel movie, March 2011
That adds up to 158 episodes plus a movie. Lewis was estimating on the fly, and it's been 15 years since the S.S. Tipton docked for good.
Has Disney responded to the Suite Life pay claims?
Not as of Tuesday night. For now, this is two cast members' account of deals made about 20 years ago. Disney hasn't given its side.
Does Dylan Sprouse want a Suite Life reboot?
Not without everybody. "The reboot's always sans this and this person," Sprouse said of other Disney Channel revivals. "That's just not the same."
He also made clear there are no hard feelings toward the cast. He called Lewis "the father of the set" and said, "I still love everyone to death."
Sprouse thinks the original show "lives very well" on streaming, for nostalgic fans and new ones. A kid stopped him at a Dodgers game recently to ask about it. "It's my dad's favorite show," she told him.
Both The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and The Suite Life on Deck stream on Disney+. Sprouse, for his part, still sounds fond of the place. Five cents and all.
