Disney’s Zootopia 3 is officially in the works, and birds are coming
Zootopia 3 confirmed at D23, but it could be years away
Disney announced Zootopia 3 at the D23 Entertainment Showcase, teasing that the sequel is going “to the birds.” That pays off a clue hiding in Zootopia 2’s post-credits scene. There’s no release date, and Disney’s own wording suggests it’s a long way out.
Judy and Nick are coming back, and this time the mammals are getting company.
Disney confirmed Zootopia 3 during the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 on August 14, with Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush taking the stage alongside Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan, the voices of Judy Hopps and Gary De’Snake.
Disney Animation followed by saying, “The world of Zootopia is about to go to the birds,” it read. “Zootopia 3 is officially in the works!”
Fans who stayed through the credits of the last movie already knew where this was going.
At the end of Zootopia 2, in a post-credits scene, a single bird feather drifts down onto Judy Hopps’ windowsill.
Disney Animation on X said,
“The world of Zootopia is about to go to the birds…
Zootopia 3 is officially in the works!”
How long is the wait for Zootopia 3
Disney says the film is still in early development, and a release date will come later.
An animated feature typically takes four to five years to make. Run that from now and you land somewhere around 2030, which matches the estimate floated late last year.
Disney hasn’t confirmed that timeline. But early development plus a five-year animation cycle is not a movie arriving soon, and anyone hoping for 2028 should probably sit down.
Why Disney greenlit Zootopia 3
The real question isn’t why there’s a third movie. It’s how anyone thought there wouldn’t be.
Zootopia 2 made $1.703 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film in Hollywood history. It passed Inside Out 2, and it currently sits as the ninth-biggest movie ever released, animated or not.
The split tells the story. $390 million domestic against $1.313 billion international, with China alone accounting for $618.9 million, the biggest total any American animated release has ever posted there. It also became the fastest PG-rated movie in history to reach a billion dollars.
Across two films, the franchise has now pulled roughly $2.7 billion.
Zootopia 2 is the highest-grossing animated film from a Hollywood studio. China’s Ne Zha 2 still holds the global animated record at roughly $2.2 billion. Zootopia is the champ of its category, not the whole sport.
What comes next
For now, the confirmed facts are short: a third film exists, birds are involved, Bush is steering, and it’s early.
Everything else is open. Whether Goodwin and Jason Bateman return feels like a safe bet given the franchise’s whole identity rests on Judy and Nick, but Disney didn’t announce the cast, just an image.
