Elio Box Office Predictions Seem to Be Dropping
Disney and Pixar’s latest film “Elio” is set to hit theaters tomorrow and Friday, but already the box office predictions seem to be dropping.
Previously, reports indicated an opening of $35-$45 million (which would be below “Lightyear”). Now the predictions seem to have dropped down to as low as $20 million, but they can go as high as $39 million.
There is a $19 million difference between the predictions, but they are generally starting to track lower.
Currently, the film has an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics being mostly positive about the film.
Metacritic has the film at 62%
It seems audiences aren’t interested in the film. Two things can be true at once, the film could be good, but audiences don’t feel it’s for them.
“Elio” could also go the way of “Elemental.” If it’s good it could start out very slow and build up over the summer to hit a bigger total. Foreign markets could also offset a loss stateside. That also happened with “Elemental.”
However, if “Elio” comes in under $29.6 million, it will be the worst Pixar opening ever. That record was previously held by “Elemental.”
“Elio” also has an uphill battle ahead of it as its budget is reportedly up to $300 million. It would have to outperform “Elemental’s” entire run simply to break even.
Of course, everyone could be wrong and it does far more than anticipated, but given the lack of buzz and open seats in the theaters I checked, I am more inclined to believe it will fall in the range given, toward the middle.
Just in our local theater, only 12 seats have been sold from Thursday through Sunday (18 showings.)
It’s not looking good.
