The handmade figures inside the Mexico Pavilion pyramid have been a World Showcase fixture for decades. A cast member confirmed the shop closes Monday, and Disney has not announced a replacement.
One of the last genuinely handmade things at EPCOT is leaving in five days.
The Oaxacan wood carving shop inside the Mexico Pavilion closes Monday, August 31, 2026, a cast member confirmed to WDW News Today.
The entire shop is currently 50 percent off as it liquidates inventory.
What the Oaxacan wood carvings are
The figures are handmade from wood harvested in the hills around the Oaxacan Valley in southern Mexico. Artisans carve them using pocketknives and machetes, sand them by hand, and paint them individually.
They depict animals, angels, and mythical creatures drawn from Oaxacan folk tradition, where parents told children stories of spirits living in the forests.
No two are identical, which is why collectors bought a new one each visit.
Where to find the shop before it closes
The stand sits in Plaza de los Amigos, the open-air-style marketplace inside the Mexico Pavilion pyramid.
It is the dim, lantern-lit indoor market designed to feel like evening in Mexico, with a smoking volcano and a Mayan pyramid visible in the distance.
Everything on the tables is marked at half the listed price. Signs confirming the discount went up this week.
What is not closing at the Mexico Pavilion
Only the wood carving stand is closing. The rest of the shops inside the pyramid are expected to continue operating normally.
Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros is unaffected. San Angel Inn Restaurante, the table-service location inside the pavilion, is also expected to keep operating.
Disney has not announced what replaces the wood carving space.
Why fans are taking this one personally
The recurring complaint is that the carvings were a specifically Mexican craft that fit the pavilion’s purpose, and that World Showcase keeps losing that kind of thing. One forum poster described it as more chipping away at what people love about EPCOT.
Another noted the carvers themselves seemed saddened by the closure while remaining professional about it.
World Showcase was built around the idea of authentic cultural representation, with artisans from each country demonstrating actual crafts. Shops selling handmade goods made by the people who make them have grown scarcer across the pavilions over the years.
What else is happening at EPCOT right now
The EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival opens tomorrow, August 27, running through November 21. More than 30 Global Marketplaces, plus the new Cheers to Cheese! exhibit opening in CommuniCore Hall on September 18.
Eat to the Beat concerts run nightly at America Gardens Theatre through November 16, included with admission.
EPCOT also has two flagship attractions queued for full reimagining after D23. Spaceship Earth is getting its first major story change in nearly 20 years, and Journey Into Imagination with Figment is being rebuilt with Dreamfinder returning. Neither has a closure or opening date.
If you want a carving
Five days, half price, and once they are gone Disney has said nothing about bringing them back.
The Oaxacan carving tradition itself is not going anywhere.
It just will not be at EPCOT after Monday.
