The in-ground lights at EPCOT’s World Celebration Gardens never worked right for long. Disney is filling in their channels with light-colored concrete that has reflective flecks.
EPCOT’s light-up pavement had a rough couple of years, and now it’s on its way out.
Disney is replacing the in-ground light strips in World Celebration Gardens, the big plaza behind Spaceship Earth, with decorative concrete. WDW News Today and BlogMickey both got a look at the first finished section on Oct. 8.
The strips used to glow in a giant EPCOT-logo pattern after dark. The new concrete follows the same curves, but it won’t light up.
What is happening to EPCOT’s light-up pavement?
Crews started pulling out the light strips in August, after Disney blocked off about half of the gardens’ center planter with rolling hedge walls. Then they started filling the empty channels with concrete.
Now one section is done and open to guests again. Where the lights used to be, there are strips of white concrete with little rocky flecks in them.
Disney hasn’t announced the change. When BlogMickey asked Disney about it in August, it didn’t hear back.
Why did EPCOT’s World Celebration lights keep breaking?
They had problems almost from day one. World Celebration Gardens opened in December 2023, and whole sections of the lights soon went dark or stopped syncing with the lights on Spaceship Earth, WDW News Today reported.
The plastic covers over the lights warped and cracked. Some areas got roped off because the uneven covers were a tripping hazard.
Disney tried a few fixes over the years:
The lights came back in full working order in December 2024, then broke again within weeks.
By January 2025, strips were separating from the ground.
In June 2025, Disney screwed the loose strips back down.
None of it stuck.
What does the new EPCOT pavement look like?
During the day, the new strips show up as pale lines against the darker pavers, with a dark border of grout around each one. They trace the same overlapping curves the lights followed, so the EPCOT-logo shape is still there.
The flecks in the concrete are reflective. BlogMickey says they seem designed to catch light from other sources after sunset, like the tall light pillars around the gardens, which are staying.
That makes for a much more subtle effect than glowing strips that synced up with Spaceship Earth. BlogMickey’s photos were taken in daylight, so the nighttime look is still a mystery.
Is the World Celebration Gardens work finished?
Not yet. Crews have moved on to the next section, and rolling planters are blocking it off. That cuts off the walkway toward World Nature in that spot, though there are easy ways around it.
In parts of the plaza crews haven’t reached yet, the old light strips are still sitting in their channels. Some still have the blue-headed screws from the June 2025 repair.
Where the new concrete meets an old strip, there are spacers wedged in between, apparently to keep the surface even.
Did EPCOT have light-up pavement before?
It did, and a lot of longtime fans remember it. The old Future World entrance area had its own light-up pavement for years.
The World Celebration lights were meant as a tribute to that original effect, WDW News Today reported. But the old lights used different technology and didn’t have the same problems. They were removed during EPCOT’s big makeover.
What’s next for Spaceship Earth?
Some bigger changes. At the D23 Expo in August, Disney said Spaceship Earth will get its first updates in nearly two decades.
The ride’s story will expand from human communication to the broader idea of human connection, Disney said. Its D23 recap didn’t include a date for those updates.
In the meantime, the finished section of pavement is open now. If you’re at EPCOT this fall, swing by after dark and see how those flecks hold up.
