Foundation work has started behind Monsters Unchained at Universal’s Epic Universe on a three-story, 93,308-square-foot building whose permits list a ride maintenance bay.
Something new is coming to Dark Universe, and now there are piles in the ground to prove it.
Construction crews have started foundation work on an expansion pad in the monster-themed land at Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, WDW News Today reported on Sunday, Oct. 4. Aerial photos from bioreconstruct show pile-driving equipment, trenches, stacked steel reinforcement and a new dirt access road.
Universal hasn’t announced what’s being built.
Where is the new Dark Universe construction?
Directly behind Darkmoor Village and the Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment show building, with the Curse of the Werewolf coaster nearby.
The woods between the existing ride building and the park’s perimeter road have been cleared. Orlando ParkStop puts the site between Monsters Unchained and the Burning Blade Tavern.
How big is the Dark Universe expansion?
Orange County permits filed this summer for “Project 680,” as reported by Orlando ParkStop, describe a three-story building with 93,308 square feet, including about 71,500 square feet of usable space.
The site is 3.34 acres, labeled “Expansion Phase 2” on earlier plans. That’s roughly two and a half football fields, end zones included.
Whiting-Turner is the general contractor.
Is the Dark Universe expansion a new ride?
All signs point that way. The permit includes a “Ride Maintenance Bay” on the first floor, and Orlando ParkStop says the paperwork supports an indoor attraction. A maintenance bay is where ride vehicles get worked on, so that’s a strong clue.
What the ride is about is still a guess. Fans have floated the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Bride of Frankenstein, but neither has been confirmed.
There is one fun breadcrumb. Orlando ParkStop points out that the existing Monsters Unchained queue mentions strange footprints in the marshland, which fans read as a nod to the Gill-man. Universal hasn’t said a word.
A water ride with the Creature from the Black Lagoon was something that had been planned but never materialized.
Which Universal monsters could the new ride use?
Dark Universe is built on the Universal Classic Monsters, the studio’s horror films from the 1930s through the 1950s.
That list includes Dracula and Frankenstein from 1931, The Mummy from 1932, The Invisible Man from 1933, Bride of Frankenstein from 1935, The Wolf Man from 1941 and Creature from the Black Lagoon from 1954.
When did Epic Universe open?
May 22, 2025. That makes this the first new attraction to break ground at the park since it opened, roughly 16 months later.
Epic Universe opened with five worlds: Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon: Isle of Berk and Dark Universe.
What is in Dark Universe right now?
Two rides, plus food and shopping. Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is the big dark ride, and Curse of the Werewolf is the family coaster that spins.
Universal’s official Dark Universe trailer gives a quick tour:
When will the new Dark Universe ride open?
No date yet. Universal hasn’t even confirmed it’s a ride.
Foundation work is an early stage, and an indoor ride building this size takes a while to go up. So don’t plan a trip around it yet. But if you’re headed to Epic Universe soon, keep an eye out behind Darkmoor.
