Teeth, horns and a “TRY OUR CANS” sign: the first finished facade in Disney World’s Monsters, Inc. land is out from behind the scaffolding, and cast members signed a coaster beam.
Monstropolis is starting to show its teeth. Literally.
Scaffolding came down this week on the first finished building facade in Monstropolis, the Monsters, Inc. land under construction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, WDW News Today reported Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The building holds restrooms next to Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, the land’s new quick-service restaurant. Archie is the six-legged Fear Tech mascot from Monsters University, the one students keep “borrowing” for pranks.
The details lean all the way into monster town. Teeth and horns trim the windows and the roofline, steel covers the corners, and the shingles are mostly blue with cream and brown accents. A water tower sits on top.
The biggest giveaway is a bright yellow sign on the brick wall that reads “TRY OUR CANS,” with “Can Co.” above it. In Monstropolis, cans are what the monsters use to collect screams.
Here’s Attractions Magazine’s latest construction update:
What is Monstropolis at Hollywood Studios?
It’s Disney World’s first Monsters, Inc. land. Disney announced it in August 2024 at D23, and the headliner is a door coaster based on the movie’s famous door chase.
Disney says it’ll be the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park, and the first Disney coaster with a vertical lift. Riders will fly through the “door vault,” just like Mike, Sulley and Boo did in the 2001 Pixar film.
When Disney shared ride details in March 2025, Imagineer Michael Hundgen said the team had been “itching to turn that moment into an attraction” since they first saw the movie.
When does Monstropolis open?
Parts of it open in 2027. Disney said in August that “parts of Monstropolis will open to guests in 2027” while work continues on the door coaster. Disney hasn’t given a date yet, or an opening year for the coaster itself.
The first wave includes:
Welcome to Monstropolis: a show at the Glob Theater with a song by Randy Newman
Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza: quick-service food
Monsters University Alumni Club
Scareporium and Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant fans know from the movie
Mike and Sulley will be the land’s hosts, according to Walt Disney Imagineering Vice President Chris Beatty.
Where is Monstropolis being built?
The front half of the land is a makeover of the old Muppets Courtyard. Muppet*Vision 3D played its last show June 7, 2025, after more than three decades. Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza moves into the old PizzeRizzo building, the Muppets-themed pizza spot. The coaster building sits on what used to be a backstage cast parking lot.
The Muppets still show up at Hollywood Studios, though. They host Disney Holidays in Hollywood during this year’s Jollywood Nights parties.
What other Monstropolis construction has happened lately?
A lot, and fast. Here’s the recent timeline:
Late April: the first coaster supports go up
Summer: track installation starts
Early August: the themed restrooms first appear
Sept. 2: scaffolding comes off the Glob Theater
Oct. 10: the coaster building is partly enclosed, with more track installed
Oct. 13: Imagineering files a permit for a playground area
Oct. 19: the first bricks go down at the land’s entrance
Hollywood Studios cast members also got to leave their mark. During the week of Oct. 19, they signed a black coaster beam, writing their names inside door-shaped stickers with Mike and Sulley on them.
What are Harryhausen’s and the Scare Pig?
Both are deep cuts for Pixar fans. Harryhausen’s is the fancy sushi restaurant in Monsters, Inc. where Mike takes Celia on a date, right before Boo shows up and the whole place panics. It’s named after Ray Harryhausen, the stop-motion effects legend behind classic movie monsters.
Archie the Scare Pig comes from the 2013 prequel, Monsters University. He’s Fear Tech’s mascot, and the chase to catch him is one of the movie’s best gags.
Disney hasn’t announced an exact opening date for the first part of Monstropolis yet.
