Greg Weisman told a FAN EXPO Chicago panel that Atomic Monster held the license and the project is finished. He has also never confirmed the animated revival that circulated in August.

The Gargoyles live-action series is not happening.

Creator Greg Weisman said as much at FAN EXPO Chicago 2026, addressing the project that had been in development at Disney+ with Atomic Monster and Disney Television Studios.

“I know the live-action side of it is, Atomic Monster had the license and that’s dead,” Weisman said.

What the Gargoyles live-action series was going to be

The project was announced in October 2023.

Writer Gary Dauberman was attached to write, executive produce, and run the series, with James Wan‘s Atomic Monster producing for Disney+.

Dauberman had talked publicly about wanting to match the original’s darker, serialized register, telling Variety in 2025 that he was aiming for the operatic tone the 1990s series carried.

That is roughly where the project’s news cycle stayed until now. Nearly three years from announcement to confirmation that it is over.

Weisman is the person who would know

His standing here matters, and it is why this closes a question rather than opening one.

Weisman created Gargoyles and ran the original series, which aired from 1994 to 1997 as part of the Disney Afternoon block.

He has spent years openly campaigning for a revival. He told Polygon he keeps a 315-page timeline for the show and notebooks full of unused ideas, and that nothing would make him happier than making more of it.

He also does not own the property and has said he earns nothing from it streaming on Disney+.

A creator that invested confirming a project is dead is about as definitive as this gets short of a studio statement.

What about the animated Gargoyles series

Worth revisiting, because we covered the claim in August and Weisman had said nothing at the time.

On the podcast Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny, Brent Spiner, who voiced Puck in the original series, said he had been told that morning that a new animated Gargoyles series was happening. Jonathan Frakes, who voiced David Xanatos, reacted on the episode.

Outlets split on which host actually said it, and at least one ran a headline calling the revival official. Disney confirmed nothing.

Weisman’s FAN EXPO comments address the live-action project specifically. He has not confirmed an animated series, which leaves that claim exactly where it was: a voice actor’s secondhand report with no studio confirmation.

What Gargoyles fans actually have

One thing, and it is on shelves now.

Weisman launched a new ongoing comic series at Dynamite Entertainment in August 2026, set in 1997, drawn by Gerardo Gambone. He has described it as a story thirty years in the making and pitched it as a jumping-on point for new readers.

That is the confirmed Gargoyles project. Everything else is either dead or unverified.

Why Gargoyles keeps almost happening

The property occupies an unusual position in Disney’s catalog.

It has a devoted adult fanbase built on a series that was genuinely darker and more serialized than anything else in the Disney Afternoon block, with Shakespearean plotting and a voice cast largely drawn from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

It also has no theme park presence, no merchandise line of consequence, and no film. Disney has kept it streaming and kept saying nothing.

Weisman has been the loudest advocate for its return for a decade, and the closest it got was a live-action series that has now been confirmed dead by the one person who never stopped asking for it.

The comic is still coming out monthly.
