Ryan Murphy said Wednesday night that he’s finished writing a script for a Glee reboot. He’s also talked with about 10 people from the original cast, and he says they’re on board with the idea.
Murphy made the comments at Variety’s Power of Women event in Los Angeles. When he was asked about the reboot, he said, “Well, funny you ask, cause I just finished the script an hour ago,” according to TheWrap.
What did Ryan Murphy say about the Glee reboot?
Here’s how he put it to Variety:
“So, we have a script. Brad [Falchuk], Ian [Brennan] and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something. I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
The cast hasn’t actually read it yet, according to TheWrap. Murphy said he wanted to write a couple of scripts first to test the waters.
“I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it,” he said.
Is the Glee reboot officially happening?
Not yet. There’s a script, but there’s no official order, no network and no release date.
What Murphy described is the step before that. He wrote something, and he’s checking whether the people who made the show want to come back. That counts for something, but nobody has green-lit anything.
He’d floated the idea before. In July, he told People that the show “is interesting because it’s come back around,” with younger viewers finding it for the first time on streaming.
Does Disney own Glee?
Yes. Glee was made by 20th Century Fox Television, which became part of Disney in 2019. It’s now called 20th Television.
The show originally aired on Fox, which Disney didn’t buy. But the studio side came with the deal. All six seasons are streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, per The Hollywood Reporter.
So if a reboot happens, a Disney streaming home would make a lot of sense. Nobody has said that, though.
When did Glee originally air?
Glee ran on Fox from May 2009 to March 2015, with six seasons and 121 episodes. It followed the misfits in the glee club at fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio.
It was a huge hit in its early years. The cast’s covers were all over the music charts, starting with “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and the show picked up six Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes, per TheWrap.
The main cast included Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Amber Riley, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz and Darren Criss. Murphy didn’t say which cast members he’s talked to.
Two of the show’s stars, Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera, died in 2013 and 2020. Any reboot would come without them, and fans are sure to keep that in mind.
What else is Ryan Murphy working on?
A lot, as usual. Murphy has kept American Horror Story going at FX, which is also owned by Disney. The show’s official companion podcast launches on Hulu on Thursday, Sept. 24.
For now, Glee fans have a script, a creator who clearly wants to do it and about 10 cast members who asked a lot of questions. That’s more than they had yesterday.
